The 2024 Ford Expedition is a full-size body-on-frame SUV that competes with the likes of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, plus others like the new Toyota Sequoia and older offerings such as the Nissan Armada and Infiniti QX80. Looking for a little more luxury? Consider the Expedition’s corporate cousin, the Lincoln Navigator.
In the most straightforward description, this Expedition is a comfortable and capable big 3-row SUV with the towing abilities of a truck. Think of it as a 7- or 8-seat station wagon that can haul the family around during the week and tow your boat to the lake on weekends.
As before, you can order this big Ford SUV as an Expedition or an Expedition Max (for an extra $3,000). Both offer seating for up to eight. With a foot-longer body and commensurately longer wheelbase, the Max has a roomier cargo compartment behind the third-row seat, with 34.3 cubic feet of space, versus only 19.3 for the standard-length Expedition.
Apart from slightly higher prices for 2024, little has changed with the Ford Expedition for 2024. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) remains standard; 4-wheel-drive (4WD) models cost $3,300 more.
With RWD, the 2024 Ford Expedition is expected to have EPA fuel economy of 17 mpg city/ 23 mpg highway/19 mpg combined. With 4WD, that will likely drop to 16 mpg city/22 mpg highway/18 mpg combined.
When not fitted with the optional Heavy Duty Towing Package, the standard-length 2024 Ford Expedition 4×2 and 4×4 models have a max tow rating of 6,000 pounds. The package increases capacity to 9,300 pounds for the 4×2 model and 9,200 for the 4x4s.
The longer Expedition Max models have lower final-drive gearing (3.73:1 vs. 3.31:1), so their maximum tow numbers differ slightly. Without the optional tow package, the Expedition Max 4×2 is rated at 6,300 pounds, while the 4×4 model comes in at 6,000. With the tow package, both 4×2 and 4×4 models of the 2024 Expedition Max are rated to tow 9,000 pounds.
There are six trim configurations for the 2024 Ford Expedition: XL, XLT, Timberline, Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum.
What’s New:
The 2024 Ford Expedition Limited 4×4 is now available with an optional Excursion Package. This $3,995 package includes the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package, Control Trac 4WD (featuring an electronic limited-slip rear differential), 3.73:1 gearing, black roof rail crossbars, and floor liners in the first and second rows of seats.
Our Recommendation:
Our favorite 2024 Ford Expedition is the XLT Max. For about $64,000, you get a roomy Expedition with lots of features we appreciate, namely a power liftgate, a power-folding third-row seat, and numerous available options like Co-Pilot360 Assist, the enhanced safety suite that includes adaptive cruise control, lane centering, and improved emergency braking.

2024 Ford Expedition XL STX: $56,075
The entry-level 2024 Ford Expedition, the XL STX, has only two rows of seats, so it’s a 5-seater with a generous amount of cargo space. It’s also better equipped than expected, though it’s unavailable as a longer Max model.
With its tinted privacy glass, running boards, black roof rails, 18-inch wheels, and body-color door handles and bumpers, the Expedition XL STX doesn’t come across as an entry-level model.
Underhood is a twin-turbo EcoBoost V6. This 3.5-liter engine produces 380 hp and a satisfying 470 lb-ft of torque, which gets sent to the wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission. The optional Control Trac 4WD system, which includes an electronic limited-slip rear differential, features eight selectable drive modes: Normal, Eco, Sport, Tow/Haul, Snow/Wet, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Rut, and Sand.
A Class IV trailer hitch receiver comes standard on this entry-level Expedition, as do heated and power-adjustable side mirrors. Wiper-activated headlights, fog lights, and a flip-up window with a wiper/washer in the rear liftgate complement those features.
Other standard features include a push-button starter, a key fob with a remote start feature, and a cloth interior with a second-row 40/20/40 bench seat that folds. The driver gets an 8-way power seat with lumbar; the front passenger gets manual adjustments.
We like the XL’s analog gauges and standard leather-wrapped steering wheel, which tilts and telescopes and has buttons for the cruise control, Bluetooth, and audio. Other niceties include tri-zone automatic climate control (with rear-seat controls) and thoughtful touches like illuminated vanity mirrors in the sun visors.
Ford’s latest Sync 4 infotainment system comes standard in the STX, where it’s supported by a touch-and-swipe 12-inch screen with voice control and a 6-speaker stereo. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and Ford’s connected AppLink suite further modernize the STX, which also boasts four USB ports and four 12-volt outlets (two in front, one in the second row, and one in the cargo compartment).
Notable among the technologies included in the standard Co-Pilot360 safety suite are automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking. You also get automatic high beams, lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning, and rear parking sensors. Trailer sway control and a rear-seat occupant reminder system are included, too.
Popular STX options include the $995 Heavy Duty Trailer Tow Package. Besides an integrated trailer brake controller, the package includes a larger radiator and Pro Trailer Backup Assist, which handles the steering while backing up to a trailer hitch.
Also noteworthy: The 4WD Expedition can be flat-towed behind a motorhome.
With the $1,895 destination fee, the 2024 Ford Expedition XL STX comes to $57,020. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and $0 down, the STX’s monthly payment totals $1,094. See 2024 Ford Expedition XL STX models for sale near you
2024 Ford Expedition XL STX includes:
- Sync 4 – This advanced infotainment system can be controlled by your voice or via a 12-inch touchscreen with swipe capability.
- Automatic emergency braking – If the driver fails to respond to a warning, the Expedition will apply its brakes automatically and forcefully to help prevent possible collisions.
- Android Auto/Apple CarPlay – Seamless access to your smartphone’s apps through the Expedition’s touchscreen is exceptionally handy.
2024 Ford Expedition XLT: $60,140; Expedition XLT Max: $63,140
The XLT, a popular trim level, features 20-inch wheels and many more standard features. Most significant is the power-folding third-row seat, which bumps the max seating capacity of this Expedition to eight. And yes, it comes with third-row USB charging points and standard SiriusXM satellite radio.
Are you looking for options and special edition packages? The XLT has both.
Package 202A ($3,795) brings heated and ventilated power front seats to the Expedition XLT, along with a heated steering wheel, durable ActiveX upholstery (first two rows), power-folding second-row captain’s chairs, power-adjustable pedals, a power liftgate, and a wireless smartphone charging pad. Also included are power-folding side-view mirrors with heated glass.
If you order the Special Edition Package ($2,745), you get Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist. In addition to adaptive cruise control and active lane centering, this advanced safety suite has front parking sensors and intersection assist, designed to prevent accidents when making a left turn across the bow of oncoming traffic. Also, the automatic emergency braking system is further enhanced with pedestrian detection. The Special Edition Package includes LED headlights, fog lights, and side-view mirrors with integrated turn signals.
For a blacked-out appearance, you can order your 2024 Ford Expedition XLT with a Black Accent Package. For $1,895, you get 20-inch black wheels with 275/55R-20 tires, a gloss-black front skidplate, a black rear bumper, and Black Onyx seat upholstery.
Among the available individual options for the 2024 Ford Expedition XLT are 4WD, roof rail crossbars, a Panoramic Vista Roof ($1,475), and an electronic limited-slip rear differential (4WD only).
When you add Ford’s $1,895 destination fee, the 2024 Expedition XLT costs $62,035. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and $0 down, the XLT’s monthly payment totals $1,171. See 2024 Ford Expedition XLT models for sale and See 2024 Ford Expedition Max XLT models for sale near you
2024 Ford Expedition Limited: $68,960; Expedition Max Limited: $71,960
The 2024 Ford Expedition Limited places a big emphasis on luxury.
To that end, it offers all the same engine and drivetrain options as the XLT, plus all the multiple features included in the 202A package above. Beyond that, the Limited comes with leather upholstery (first two rows), a Panoramic Vista Roof, and a foot-activated power liftgate.
What else distinguishes the Limited? Ford’s Co-Pilot 360 Assist comes standard, as do LED headlights and taillights, heated second-row seats, rain-sensing wipers, and a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system with active noise cancellation.
If you want a sporty and remarkably quick Expedition, get the Limited with the Stealth Performance Edition Package 304A. For a not-insubstantial $10,360, you get a 440-hp version of the EcoBoost V6, sport-tuned suspension, black 22-inch alloy wheels, Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0, and a fantastic 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system. It also has red brake calipers, red interior stitching, a black twin-spar grille, a black rear bumper, and black headlight bezels.
If you like the sport-tuned suspension and many of the aesthetic enhancements but don’t need the high-output EcoBoost V6, consider the Limited Stealth Package 303A. For $4,670, it also includes a 360-degree camera with front and rear washers.
Another possibility is to order your Expedition Limited with the 302A High Equipment Group. For $2,705, you get a twin-spar grille with chrome trim, 22-inch polished aluminum wheels, power running boards, and Ford Co-Pilot 360 Assist 2.0.
Also notable: You can get the massive portrait-oriented 15.5-inch touchscreen (standard on the King Ranch and Platinum models) on the Expedition Limited for a reasonable $795.
Lastly, new for 2024 is the Excursion Package. This $3,995 package includes the Heavy Duty Trailer Tow Package, Control Trac 4WD, an electronic limited-slip rear differential, 3.73:1 gearing, black roof rail crossbars, and floor liners in the first and second rows of seats.
With the $1,895 destination fee, the 2024 Ford Expedition Limited costs $70,855. On a 60-month loan at 5% financing with $0 down, the Limited will have a monthly payment of $1,337. See 2024 Ford Expedition Limited models for sale and See 2024 Ford Expedition Max Limited models for sale near you
2024 Ford Expedition Limited includes:
- Foot-activated tailgate – Why fumble around looking for a key fob when all you need to do is swipe your foot under the back bumper to open the power hatch?
- Panoramic Vista Roof – This sizeable panoramic glass roof gives a great sky view. A power sunshade is on duty for those days when the sun might be a bit too intense.
- B&O sound system – We know from experience that the 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo sounds fantastic.
2024 Ford Expedition Timberline: $72,550
The Expedition Timberline, new in 2022, is designed for the dirt. It’s sold exclusively with the standard wheelbase and 4WD. There’s no Max version, and it’s blessed with a class-leading 10.6 inches of ground clearance. Power comes from the high-output version of the turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 that cranks out 440 hp. Max tow rating: 9,200 pounds.
Ford gives the Timberline a more rugged, outdoor look. This appearance starts with exclusive interior and exterior colors and black 18-inch alloy wheels wearing all-terrain tires, size P265/70R-18.
Further distinguishing the Expedition Timberline are dual exhausts, LED fog lights, red tow hooks, and spotlights integrated into the side mirrors.
Mechanical upgrades abound. Besides the front, rear, and center skid plates, the Expedition Timberline has an electronic limited-slip rear differential, a heavy-duty radiator, and fortified off-road suspension. It also has Trail Control (a low-speed form of off-road cruise control) and Trail Turn Assist (which locks the inside rear wheel to help the big Expedition make tighter turns on the trail).
Inside the Timberline, you get power front seats, a power-folding second-row bench seat, ActiveX seat upholstery (with orange stitching), and a heated tilt/telescoping steering wheel.
Other noteworthy standard features include a foot-activated power liftgate, a smartphone charging pad, and a 115-volt power outlet.
Option package 501A ($9,220) brings an enormous amount of hardware to the Timberline. Besides a 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster and a massive 15.5-inch touchscreen with navigation, you get Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0 and HD Radio.
Ford’s Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0 includes a 360-degree camera, automatic reverse braking, front and rear camera washers, and Active Park Assist 2.0, which automatically parks the Expedition in a parallel or perpendicular spot. But be warned: You can’t get the Heavy Duty Trailer Tow Package if you want Active Park Assist.
With its $1,895 destination fee, the 2024 Ford Expedition Timberline costs $74,445. On a 60-month loan at 5% financing and $0 down, the Timberline will have a monthly payment of $1,405. 2024 Ford Expedition Timberline includes:
- High-output EcoBoost engine – The high-output version of Ford’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 puts out 440 hp and a stout 510 lb-ft of torque.
- Off-road suspension – This specially tuned suspension gives the Timberline more than 10 inches of ground clearance, helping it go places other Expeditions can’t.
- Trail Control – This technology keeps the Timberline moving at a slow but steady pace over rough terrain, letting the driver concentrate more on the steering.
2024 Ford Expedition King Ranch: $79,015; Expedition Max King Ranch: $82,015
The King Ranch Expedition is based on the well-equipped Limited model. It continues to be the Expedition aimed at wealthy ranchers. Or at least folks who want to look like rich ranchers.
Can you blame them? The 2024 Ford Expedition King Ranch model pampers on the inside with rich Del Rio leather seat upholstery and attractive Ziricote wood trim. On the outside, this Expedition exudes class with handsome gray cladding, 22-inch wheels, chrome roof rails, and unapologetically large King Ranch badging.
Besides power-deployable side steps, the 2024 Expedition King Ranch comes standard with Sync 4A infotainment, the massive 15.5-inch touchscreen, a 22-speaker B&O sound system, and a 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster.
There aren’t many options for the King Ranch. The $995 Heavy Duty Trailer Tow Package makes good sense if you plan to do any towing. And if your life occasionally involves driving in slippery or mucky conditions, get the $1,500 ControlTrac 4WD, which includes an electronic limited-slip rear differential.
Another option on the Expedition King Ranch worthy of consideration is the CCD (continuously controlled damping) suspension. This $1,495 suspension works wonders, adjusting shock absorber stiffness in milliseconds. It smooths the ride over rough pavement while firming it for better control when the road twists left and right.
With the $1,895 destination fee, the 2024 Ford Expedition King Ranch costs $80,910. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and $0 down, the King Ranch’s monthly payment totals $1,527. See 2024 Ford Expedition King Ranch models for sale and See 2024 Ford Expedition Max King Ranch models for sale near you
2024 Ford Expedition King Ranch includes:
- Del Rio leather – This supple leather, in a rich mahogany brown, covers all three rows of the Expedition King Ranch seats.
- B&O audio – With 22 speakers, including a subwoofer, the King Ranch’s sound system fills the Expedition cabin with glorious sounds.
- Power running boards – These steps automatically extend whenever the doors of the Expedition King Ranch are opened.
2024 Ford Expedition Platinum: $81,245; Expedition Max Platinum: $84,245
The Platinum continues its reign as the most opulent Ford Expedition. With all the standard and optional equipment from the Limited and most of what’s found on the King Ranch, the Expedition Platinum makes a big statement.
Strangely, even though the Platinum is priced above $80,000, it doesn’t come with standard 4WD; it will cost you roughly $3,300 extra, just like it does on most other Expedition trim levels.
That anomaly aside, the Ford Expedition Platinum gets the best available standard features. These include Sync 4A infotainment with the giant 15.5-inch touchscreen, plus the Panoramic Vista Roof, a 360-degree overhead camera view, CCD adaptive suspension, Active Park Assist 2.0, rear parking sensors, and the powerful 22-speaker B&O sound system.
Unique features on the 2024 Ford Expedition Platinum include massaging front seats upholstered in exceptionally soft leather with perforated inserts and quilted bolsters. The interior door panels also are beautifully covered in leather, while the steering wheel is wrapped in Wollsdorf leather with Pecan Euro stitching.
Perhaps the most notable standard feature on the 2024 Ford Expedition Platinum is BlueCruise, the autonomous driving feature that works on about 130,000 miles of designated highways in North America. While BlueCruise allows you to drive for long stretches with your hands off the steering wheel and your foot off the gas, you must continue to look forward. If you don’t, BlueCruise will shut off.
Notable options on the Ford Expedition Platinum include ControlTrac 4WD (which includes an electronic limited-slip rear differential and costs $1,500) and the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package ($995).
With the $1,895 destination fee, the 2024 Ford Expedition Platinum costs $83,140. On a 60-month loan at 5% financing and $0 down, the Platinum’s monthly payment comes to $1,569. See 2024 Ford Expedition Platinum models for sale and See 2024 Ford Expedition Max Platinum models for sale near you
2024 Ford Expedition Platinum includes:
- BlueCruise 1.0 – Ford’s semi-autonomous driving system allows hands-free driving on 130,000 miles of highways in North America. The driver must keep looking ahead.
- Massaging front seats – The Platinum’s heated and vented front seats feature an active massage feature that helps keep you comfortable on long trips.
- Power-folding captain’s chairs – These power-folding middle-row seats with armrests tip and slide to facilitate access to the third row.
