2024 Ford Super Duty: Choosing the Right Trim

The 2024 Ford Super Duty F-250 and F-350 trucks continue to collect accolades for their durability, capability, and longevity. With plenty of options for towing, hauling, and even off-roading, the Super Duty saw a major makeover last year, so this year, they carry over with only a few minor changes.

The Super Duty trucks offer two powerful gas engines displacing 6.8 and 7.3 liters, a 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8, and a nearly endless list of bed, cab, and chassis configurations. All are backed by a 10-speed automatic transmission with XLT and higher trims also equipped with standard 4-wheel drive (4WD). F-350 models offer the option of dual rear-wheel (DWR) axles.

XL and XLT trims offer the choice of Regular Cab, SuperCab, or Crew Cab. The Lariat starts with the SuperCab and offers a Crew Cab, while the King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited are Crew Cab-only. A 6.75- or 8-foot bed rounds out the main exterior choices.

When properly equipped, the Super Duty F-250 and F-350 can tow up to 40,000 pounds with a gooseneck and 30,000 pounds conventional.

Competitors in the heavy-duty truck segment include the Chevrolet Silverado HD and the GMC Sierra HD, plus the Ram 2500 and 3500.

What’s New:

Changes for 2024 are minor. You’ll find some new colors and expanded availability of the flex-fuel 6.8-liter V8 on complete pickups (not available with pickup box delete). The B&O Unleashed sound system loses the headrest speakers, dropping the total speaker count to 14.

The XL and XLT now offer the On-Board bed scales and Smart Hitch systems, while the Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum get a 1-year trial to Connected Navigation.

A $1,000 price increase is consistent across the model range.

Our Recommendation:

If you’re looking for a solid work truck that is not afraid to get dirty, the base XL is as tough as they come. However, if you want a truck that doubles as your daily driver, then the XLT or Lariat makes the best choice.

If you’ve got deep pockets and need a truck as technologically advanced as it is capable, the Limited is our first choice, with the King Ranch, a close runner-up. The King Ranch has a more rugged feel better suited to rural customers, such as ranchers, farmers, and oil-field workers.

2024 Ford F-250 XL: $44,970, F-350 XL: $46,015

The most basic Super Duty is the XL. It’s a solid work truck with few frills and an interior designed to get dirty.

Rear-wheel drive is the standard layout, with 4WD optional. Power comes from a 6.8-liter flex-fuel V8, but buyers can upgrade to a 7.3-liter V8 (not offered with dual-rear-wheel axle) or the 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8, which also comes in a High-Output version.

The XL features trailer sway and brake control, 17-inch painted steel wheels, remote keyless entry, a 3-ton mechanical jack (4-ton hydraulic on F-350 DRW), and a 34-gallon gas tank (48 gallons on long-wheelbase Crew Cab). The XL bed features four tie-downs, sidesteps, and lamps in the bed and cargo area.

The XL is a good choice for those who ride their trucks hard and don’t worry about getting a few scrapes or dents. It features black bumpers with a rear bumper step, manual telescoping trailering mirrors with power heated glass and built-in convex mirror, a removable tailgate with a power lock, and a 2.5-inch trailer hitch with a 7-wire harness and 4- and 7-pin connector (3-inch hitch on F-350 DRW).

You won’t find many advanced driver-assist safety systems on the XL. It has full airbag coverage, hill start assist, auto on/off halogen headlights, and a rearview monitor. Those who want more can opt for the XL Driver Assist Package, which adds forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and auto high-beam headlights.

The no-frills XL cab features a manually adjustable 40/20/40 vinyl front bench seat with driver’s side manual lumbar support, manual single zone air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with controls for the cruise, Bluetooth, and message screens. Black vinyl covers the floor.

A 4.2-inch LCD productivity screen serves as the instrument cluster information center, with analog gauges for the fuel, engine coolant temp, oil pressure, and transmission fluid temperature.

Infotainment duties fall to the Sync 4 system, featuring an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. Along with a 4-speaker AM/FM/MP3 stereo, the system includes FordPass Connect subscription-based apps for a 5G Wi-Fi hot spot, remote start, vehicle status reports, and vehicle locater, to name a few.

Through various packages and options, XL buyers can add different rear axle ratios, a snowplow prep package, a camping package, a 360-degree camera, a power-sliding rear window, and a beefed-up front suspension.

The XL Off-Road Package adds 33-inch off-road tires, skid plates, an electronic locking rear differential, and water fording vent tubes for the transfer case and axles. Those looking to go further can opt for the FX4 Off-Road Package, which adds all-terrain tires, an off-road suspension, hill-descent control, and skid plates.

The STX Appearance Package adds a ton of features, most notably the 360-degree camera, auto high-beam headlights, a blind-spot monitor with trailer coverage, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, and reverse sensing with emergency braking. The package includes Ford’s BoxLink with four locking cleats, a cloth bench seat with manual driver’s lumbar support, a carpeted floor, 18-inch wheels, and LED fog lights.

The Tow Technology Package adds the Driver Assist Package, 360-degree camera, Pro Trailer Backup Assist, Trailer Reverse Guidance, and lane-departure warning (XL only).

New for 2024 is the On-Board Scales and Smart Hitch options, formerly only offered on the upper trims.

Other upgrades include a spray-in bedliner, a power winch, gooseneck prep, rapid heat cab heater (diesel), Pro Power Onboard 2-kW bed outlet, LED bed lighting, side running boards, 18-, 19-, and 20-inch wheels, on-board weight scales (estimate payload in real-time), and a long list of accessories, upfitter packages, and dealer add-ons.

With the $1,995 delivery charge, the 2024 Ford F-250 XL Regular Cab costs $46,965. On a 60-month loan at 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment comes to $886.

2024 Ford F-250 King Ranch: $76,975, F-350 King Ranch: $78,025

The King Ranch is the first of three high-end trims, each with a unique theme. From here out, the Super Duty trucks come only in Crew Cab configuration, with two wheelbase lengths and two bed sizes.

The King Ranch includes all content from the Lariat, then adds upgrades like dual batteries and alternators, power deployable running boards, 20-inch bright machined alloy wheels, and King Ranch-specific accent color on the bumpers and lower trim.

King Ranch Kingsville Antique Affect leather looks rugged and inviting as it covers the seats, door panels, and power-adjustable heated steering wheel.

FAQ

  • How much can the 2024 Ford Super Duty tow?

Tow ratings vary depending on model and hitch placement. An adequately outfitted 2024 Ford  Super Duty can pull up to 40,000 pounds using a gooseneck bed hitch.

  • How many MPGs does the 2024 Ford Super Duty get?

The EPA doesn’t evaluate the fuel economy of ¾-ton and one-ton pickup trucks.

  • Which 2024 Ford Super Duty trim offers the most safety?

In testing the 2022 Super Duty, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave it excellent marks, with an overall five-star rating on the Crew Cab and four stars for the Regular Cab. As the 2024 Super Duty has not yet been tested, we can’t speak to definitive results, but we don’t imagine they’ll change much.

As for the safest trim, we’d pick any that includes or offers Co-Pilot360 2.0. When so equipped, the Super Duty F-250 and F-350 provide the same level of protection and driver assistance as most high-end cars, an added benefit given the truck’s massive proportions and numerous down-low blind spots.
