2024 Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid

It’s a relatively quiet year for the 2024 Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), which can travel 33 miles on electricity alone when starting with a fully charged battery. After the battery is exhausted, this Tucson PHEV continues to drive like a conventional SUV, using its gasoline engine.

Working together, the turbocharged 1.6-liter gasoline engine and the electric motor in the Tucson PHEV combine to produce a stout 261 horsepower, making this the quickest Tucson you can buy. All-wheel drive (AWD) is standard, as is a 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

The Tucson PHEV’s chief competitors continue to be the Toyota RAV4 Prime, Kia Sportage PHEV, and Ford Escape PHEV.

According to the EPA, the Tucson PHEV has a combined fuel efficiency rating of 35 mpg, or 80 MPGe, when using strictly electricity. It also has an electric-only range of 33 miles and a maximum gas/electric range of 420 miles.

While that’s good, it’s not quite up to the slightly more expensive Toyota RAV4 Prime, which has 302 hp, is rated by the EPA at 38 combined or 94 MPGe on electricity, and has an electric-only range of 42 miles.

That stated, there’s much to like about the stylish 2024 Hyundai Tucson PHEV, which adds power and efficiency to the Tucson line of compact SUVs. Although it has a roomy interior, it has a bit less cargo room than the regular Tucson Hybrid, thanks to its larger 13.8-kWh lithium-ion battery. The standard Tucson Hybrid has a 1.49-kWh battery.

Trim reviews of the standard Hyundai Tucson (the non-hybrid model equipped with a gasoline engine only) and the Tucson Hybrid (the one that doesn’t need to be plugged in) appear elsewhere on Autotrader.

What’s New:

For 2024, all Hyundai Tucson PHEVs gain rear side-impact airbags and steering with haptic feedback (when using lane-keeping assist or blind-spot collision avoidance). Also notable: The SEL gets a 10.25-inch navigation screen, which means the connection to Apple CarPlay/Android Auto now requires a cable.

Our Recommendation:

Our favorite 2024 Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid is the SEL. It’s nearly $7,000 more affordable than the Limited but is still generously equipped with safety and convenience features.

2024 Hyundai Tucson SEL Plug-in Hybrid: $38,475

Unless you’re the sort who absolutely must have all the latest technologies, we think the SEL will satisfy more buyers than the Hyundai Tucson PHEV Limited.

Here’s why: It’s priced nearly $7,000 below the Limited but offers the same excellent power and efficiency. Equally significant, the Tucson SEL Plug-in Hybrid is a far cry from some stripped base model offering.

Standard highlights include 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights (and daytime running lights), roof rails, remote keyless entry, and proximity keyless entry with push-button start.

Inside the SEL, you get dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, a wireless smartphone charger, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, four USB ports, and a reclining 60/40-split-folding rear seat. Helping keep the SEL driver get comfortable is a tilt/telescopic steering wheel and an 8-way power-adjustable seat with lumbar support.

Other welcome details in the SEL: Most prominent is a navigation system with a 10.25-inch screen, plus other niceties like a hands-free power liftgate and rear air-conditioning vents.

Nor is technology forgotten in the SEL. In addition to the Hyundai Digital Key and Bluelink+ Connected Car, the Plug-in SEL comes equipped with adaptive cruise control and a comprehensive suite of advanced safety and driver-aid technologies.

Besides a forward collision warning (with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection), all Tucson SEL PHEVs come standard with a junction-turning assist, lane-following assist, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring (with steering assist), and a rear cross-traffic alert.

New for 2024 are side-impact airbags for the rear-seat passengers, which bring the total airbag count to eight in the Tucson.

Adding the $1,335 destination fee to the Tucson SEL PHEV base price brings the total to $39,810. With $0 down, financing for 60 months at 5% interest works out to about $751 per month. See 2024 Hyundai Tucson SEL Plug-in Hybrid models for sale near you

2024 Hyundai Tucson SEL Plug-in Hybrid includes:

10.25-inch navigation screen – This larger screen, 10.25 inches wide, makes it easier to view the map while driving. But it also means the connection to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto requires a cable.

Haptic feedback – When using lane-keeping assist and blind-spot collision avoidance, the Tucson’s steering wheel will vibrate slightly if you’ve crossed a lane marker or attempted to change lanes when it’s not safe.

Digital Key – This system allows drivers to control certain functions of their Tucson Plug-in Hybrid through their smartphones, like locking and unlocking the doors.

2024 Hyundai Tucson Limited Plug-in Hybrid: $45,200

As the top Tucson PHEV, the Limited model comes with many more convenience and tech features, added safety, and a commensurately higher price.

Extra comfort is addressed via standard leather upholstery, with ventilated front seats and heated seats in both rows. Moreover, the Limited gets a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel, a premium Bose audio system, a panoramic sunroof, and 64 colors of available ambient interior lighting.

You also get navigation-based Smart Cruise Control and Highway Driving Assist, Hyundai’s semi-autonomous highway driving system that handles much of the driving and requires you to keep your hands on the steering wheel and eyes on the road.

On the outside, the Tucson PHEV Limited is distinguished by its dark chrome grille and H logo, LED taillights, and side mirrors with integrated turn signals.

2024 Hyundai Tucson Limited Plug-in Hybrid includes:

Tire Mobility Kit – Both Tucson PHEVs have a tire repair kit instead of a spare tire. The large battery fills the space where a spare tire would typically reside.

Rain-sensing wipers – If the system senses moisture on the windshield, the wipers turn on automatically. The wiper speed adjusts to the volume of the rain.

Curve Control – The nav system lets the Smart Cruise Control know when curves are approaching on the highway, so the latter can slow the Tucson PHEV if needed.
