Although classified as an SUV, the 2024 Subaru Outback is actually a tall wagon, with 8.7 inches of ground clearance (9.5 for the Wilderness), standard Symmetrical all-wheel drive (AWD), and a choice of nine trims covering a wide range of prices and potential buyers.
The Outback offers car-like comfort with the utility of a wagon. It has an unimpeachable reputation for safety, reliability, and strong resale values, helping it to develop an almost cult-like following.
The standard engine in all but the XT and Wilderness trims is a 182-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder. Though not big on power, this flat-4 engine returns respectable fuel economy and is tow-rated to 2,700 pounds.
Those needing more power should opt for the Wilderness or XT trims, each equipped with a 260-horsepower turbocharged 2.4-liter engine and a 3,500-pound tow rating.
All Outback trims employ a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).
While not many wagons exist in the market, buyers might cross-shop the most expensive Outback trims against the Volvo V90 Cross Country, Audi A6 allroad quattro, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon.
2024 Subaru Outback Base: $28,895
The 2024 Subaru Outback Base offers a nice combination of standard safety equipment and basic creature comforts. It’s a good choice for people needing the Outback’s utility and AWD capability but not many fancy, high-tech features.
Along with the 2.5-liter engine and AWD, the Outback has steering wheel paddle shifters, X-Mode hill descent control, and Active Torque Vectoring that improves stability by channeling power to the outside front wheel during aggressive cornering.
Auto Vehicle Hold (AVH) holds the Outback in place after a stop, making it unnecessary for drivers to keep their foot on the brake while waiting for a light to change.
The base Outback features Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assist suite, which includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist.
However, if you want more advanced features like blind-spot monitoring and automatic emergency steering, you’ll have to move up to the Premium or higher trims.
The Outback Base rides on 17-inch alloy wheels and features auto on/off wiper-linked steering-responsive LED headlights, automatic high beams, LED fog lights, and raised roof rails with integrated cross bars that store in the rails when not in use.
Also standard is a rear wiper/washer along with power side mirrors, one-touch up/down driver and front passenger windows, a rear backup camera, and a keyless entry system via the key fob in hand.
The Outback’s interior wears durable cloth fabric. It features a height-adjustable manually operated driver’s seat, 60/40-split folding and reclining rear seats, cargo area rear seat release levers, and a rear seat reminder that helps the driver remember to check the back seat for a child or a pet before exiting the vehicle.
Outback amenities include automatic climate control, LED interior lighting, one-touch lane changer turn signals, power door locks, illuminated power window switches, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio, cruise, and Bluetooth controls.
The Outback Base gets dual 7-inch touchscreens. The upper screen houses the infotainment system with a 4-speaker AM/FM/HD Radio tuner, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth streaming, and Subaru Starlink services. A single backlit USB-A port serves as the data and charge port.
The lower screen operates the climate controls, X-Mode, EyeSight, and various vehicle systems.
The Outback comes with two 12-volt outlets, one in the glove box and one in the rear cargo area.
Although the Base model offers no packages, numerous accessories exist. These include interior and exterior protective pieces, cargo organizers, bike carriers, cargo carriers, and even a pet kennel. There’s also a pet ramp, protective rear door covers (think dog drool), and pet-friendly seat covers.
With the $1,295 destination charge, the 2024 Subaru Outback Base costs $30,190. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to $570. See 2024 Subaru Outback models for sale near you
2024 Subaru Outback Base includes:
- EyeSight – Subaru’s package of driver assists can relieve stress in heavy traffic, prevent some low-speed collisions, and help keep the car centered in its lane.
- X-Mode – The X-Mode system helps when driving in heavy snow or creeping down steep off-road trails. The system regulates throttle, transmission shifting, and traction control, giving the driver greater control in low-speed situations requiring maximum traction.
- Steering responsive LED headlights – These clever headlights pivot toward the direction of the steering wheel, illuminating dark curves before entering. They illuminate automatically when the wipers are switched on.
2024 Subaru Outback Premium: $31,195
The Premium is the most popular trim, adding value and features without a big jump in price.
Building off the Base model, the Premium adds rear privacy glass, heated power mirrors with integrated turn signals, and windshield wiper de-icers (part of the All-Weather Package).
The cabin gains a 10-way power driver’s seat with power lumbar support, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear seat air vents, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift lever handle.
The Premium’s infotainment system upgrades to an 11.6-inch touchscreen and features a 6-speaker stereo with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The center console gains a USB-A charge port upfront and one USB-A and USB-C charge port for the rear seat passengers, all illuminated.
The Premium trim offers two option packages. The first includes a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency steering, a hands-free power liftgate, and Keyless Access with push-button start. Keyless Access allows unlocking and starting the car without physically holding the key fob. At the same time, PIN security can unlock the vehicle using a 4-digit code rather than the key fob.
Automatic emergency steering helps steer the vehicle away from a potential collision with another car or stationary object.
The second package includes all the above features, TomTom navigation, and a power moonroof.
One dealer-installed accessory we think should be part of a package is a wireless charging pad.
With the $1,295 destination charge, the 2024 Subaru Outback Premium costs $32,490. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to $613. See 2024 Subaru Outback Premium models for sale near you
