The 2024 Subaru Solterra brings Subaru all-wheel-drive confidence to a compact electric SUV with up to 227 miles of range. While not as range-efficient as a Ford Mustang Mach-E or Tesla Model Y, the Solterra aligns with its nearly identical twin, the Toyota bZ4X, when equipped with all-wheel drive.
Buyers can choose three trims: Premium, Limited, and Touring. Each offers varying degrees of equipment and luxury, priced within a few thousand dollars of each other. And, while buying a Solterra won’t qualify you for the $7,500 tax credit, leasing one might.
What’s New:
Subaru makes some significant improvements to the 2024 Solterra. A new steering wheel permits a less obstructive view of the instrument cluster and features paddle shifters that let the driver moderate the regenerative braking. Improvements to the battery’s cold-weather conditioning decrease overall charge times, allowing a 10-80% charge in as little as 35 minutes when using a DC fast charging station.
The Solterra’s EyeSight driver-assist system also sees improvements, gaining hands-free driving capability at speeds up to 25 mph, including in stop-and-go traffic. The system also features Active Lane Change Assist, which can automatically change lanes once the turn signal is activated, and Front Cross Traffic Alert, which warns of potential danger when approaching an intersection.
Our Recommendation:
While we usually look for the most cost-effective trim, the middle-child Limited is our pick in this case. Yes, it costs a few thousand more than the Premium, but the Limited only tacks on about $70 to the monthly payment when you boil it down. With features like a larger infotainment screen, Harman Kardon speakers, and a 10-way power driver’s seat, spending the extra money is justifiable.
These are the manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP) and include the $1,345 factory-to-dealer delivery fee (destination charge). Prices are current at the time of publishing.

2024 Subaru Solterra Premium: $46,340
The 2024 Subaru Solterra Premium comes standard with two electric motors (one in front and one in the rear) with a combined output of 215 hp. A 72.8-kilowatt battery takes about nine hours to charge at home using a Level 2 charger or can attain an 80% charge in about 35 minutes using a DC fast charging station.
Like all Subaru SUVs, the Solterra comes standard with all-wheel drive (AWD). However, in this case, it’s an all-electric setup that includes a feature called “Grip Control.” Not to be confused with X-Mode (also standard), Grip Control is low-speed cruise control that holds the Solterra at a constant speed even when off-roading. The system also includes Downhill Assist Control.
As mentioned above, X-Mode provides additional traction in low-speed situations, with settings for Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud. The system allows for actual off-road ability aided by the Solterra’s 8.3 inches of ground clearance.
The StarDrive drivetrain includes three driving modes and four different regenerative braking modes selectable via steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. There’s also a single-pedal-drive feature for more aggressive regenerative braking. Choose the sport mode when you need added responsiveness or the one-pedal driving mode to slow the vehicle without hitting the brakes.
Visually, the Solterra strikes a rock-solid stance, with styling slightly reminiscent of the Mustang Mach-E and Kia EV6. Standard features include LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, heated side mirrors, and windshield wiper de-icers.
Deep-tinted rear privacy glass is also standard, but oddly, the rear hatch has no wiper/washer. Also included is a rearview monitor with a washer, fixed crossbar mounting points, and a proximity key fob with keyless entry and start.
The Solterra Premium’s cabin is pleasant but not luxurious. It includes cloth upholstery, 4-mode heated front seats, automatic climate control, power door locks, an electric parking brake, and one-touch up/down power windows.
A 7-inch LCD gauge cluster houses the speedometer, charging, electric use information, and driver-selectable screens for various readouts. The tilt/telescoping steering wheel includes buttons for Bluetooth, cruise control, audio, and driver information screens.
To the right of the instrument cluster is a center-mounted multimedia system with an 8-inch color touchscreen. Features within the system include a 6-speaker AM/FM HD Radio, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio (with a 4-month trial subscription), Bluetooth streaming, and an available Wi-Fi hot spot.
The Solterra includes five USB ports: two USB-C ports, one USB-A port in the front console, and two USB-C ports in the rear seat area.
Subaru Solterra Connect (SSC) provides a host of subscription-based apps and programs that allow remote climate control, remote locking/unlocking, cloud navigation, and more. Subaru’s Intelligent Assistant allows for voice operation of climate control, phone, audio, and vehicle information. Just say, “Hey, Subaru,” and the assistant eagerly awaits your command.
Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assist suite is standard and includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control with lane tracing, intersection collision avoidance assist (detects pedestrians or vehicles about to cross in front of the car and activates the brakes), emergency steering assist, and automatic high-beam headlights.
Other standard systems include a blind-spot monitor, reverse automatic braking, lead vehicle start alert, and Safe Exit Assist that warns an exiting driver and passengers of vehicles approaching from the rear.

2024 Subaru Solterra Premium includes:
One-pedal driving – The Solterra’s regenerative braking modes include the ability to drive without ever having to move your foot to the brake. Once you back off the accelerator, the car rapidly decelerates, charging the battery.
Reverse automatic braking – Uses rear parking sensors to detect people or objects when backing up, alerting the driver and activating the brakes to avoid a collision.
Adaptive cruise control – Maintains a safe distance between the Solterra and cars ahead. The system can slow down, speed up, and even come to a complete stop without any assistance from the driver.
2024 Subaru Solterra Limited: $49,840
The Limited brings many features, making it the most desirable of the three trims for just a few thousand dollars more.
Building off the Premium, the Limited adds a 12.3-inch multimedia display with available cloud-based navigation, a wireless charging pad, a 360-degree panoramic view monitor, and Advanced Park, which can parallel or perpendicular park the Solterra with minimal driver input.
Additional equipment includes rear cross-traffic alert, LED fog lights, a 10-way power driver’s seat with power lumbar support and 2-position memory, an 8-way power passenger seat, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel.
The Limited also gains a height-adjustable power rear liftgate, rain-sensing wipers, roof rails, a roof spoiler, 20-inch wheels, power-folding side mirrors, StarTex (synthetic leather) upholstery, and a premium 11-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

2024 Subaru Solterra Touring: $53,340

Digital rearview mirror – This clever mirror isn’t a mirror at all. Instead, it is a view screen hooked to a rear camera projecting an unobstructed view behind the vehicle.
