As the world warms to electric vehicles, Volvo is ready to meet the need with its compact XC40 Recharge. Sharing its styling and features with the XC40 hybrid, the EV version sacrifices nothing except the need to burn fossil fuels and pay high gas prices at the pump.
This year, a new Single Motor rear-drive model extends the range by about 40 miles, elevating the maximum distance traveled on a single charge to 293 miles. Opting for the Twin all-wheel drive version brings twin electric motors, a significant boost in horsepower, and a 254-mile range.
Starting in the low $ 50,000 range, the XC40 Recharge competes directly with the Genesis G60 and Audi Q4 e-tron but can even be shopped against more expensive EVs like the Jaguar I-Pace or less-expensive models like the Tesla Model Y.
Like the standard XC40 Hybrid, Volvo offers the Recharge in three trims: Core, Plus, and Ultimate.

What’s New:
Volvo adds an XC40 Recharge Single Motor rear-drive model with a larger battery, giving it nearly 300 miles of range. The XC40 Recharge Twin with standard all-wheel drive (AWD) also sees improvements to its electric motors, extending its range to 254 miles. While the Single Motor has a greater range, its 248 horsepower pales compared to the Twin’s 402 hp.
Rounding out the changes for 2024, the Core gets new 19-inch wheels, while the Plus gains an air purifier. The Ultimate gets Pixel LED headlights and cornering lights. Rear-door power child locks are removed from the Core and Plus and are only available on the top-line Ultimate.
Our Recommendation:
Although expensive, the Volvo XC40 Recharge Ultimate is the best choice, chiefly for its added driver aids, Harman Kardon audio, and Pixel LED adaptive headlights.

2024 Volvo XC40 Recharge Core: $52,450 (Single Motor, RWD), $54,200 (Twin, AWD)
Like all Volvo XC40 Recharge SUVs, the Core Single Motor features an 82-kWh battery pack and a single rear-mounted electric motor. By comparison, the Twin models gain a second electric motor up front and a 78-kWh battery. The Twin is much faster, but the Single Motor takes the prize for distance covered on a single charge. A 19-foot, 40-amp NEMA 14-50 charging cable lets you use a Level 2 home charger.
Volvo buyers expect safety to be a top priority, and the XC40 Recharge does not disappoint. Standard driver assists include forward collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot monitor with steering assist, and rear cross-traffic detection with auto-braking.
Run-Off Road Mitigation steers this electric Volvo back into its lane when detecting it’s about to leave the road. Additional systems include a driver monitor and road sign information you may have missed (displays posted speed limits, no-passing zones, etc.).
Volvo’s Slippery Road Alert warning system and Oncoming Lane Mitigation come standard. The latter system can help steer the ute back into its lane if it detects you’ve crossed the center lane marker and traveled into the path of an oncoming vehicle.
A rear backup camera and rear parking sensors wrap up the safety systems.
A quick walk around the Core’s exterior reveals LED headlights with automatic high beam activation, rain-sensing wipers, 19-inch alloy wheels, black roof rails, tinted rear privacy glass, and power-folding auto-dimming heated side mirrors.
The Core features keyless entry with a proximity key fob, allowing for unlocking the doors without pushing a button on the fob. A hands-free power liftgate is also standard, activated by swiping your foot under the rear bumper. The key fob can remotely open and close the rear liftgate and close the power windows. In place of a spare tire, the XC40 Recharge has a tire repair kit with an electric air compressor and tire sealant.
The Core’s cabin features a 100% vegan interior, with faux leather on the seats, steering wheel, and door panels. There’s a memory power driver’s seat with lumbar support, and both driver and passenger seats are heated and feature manual lower seat cushion extensions.
Interior amenities include a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with buttons for cruise control, audio, and Bluetooth. Also standard is a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, dual-zone automatic climate controls with humidity sensor, and ambient interior lighting.
The XC40 Recharge comes with a 9-inch center touchscreen, giving access to various features, including audio, electric vehicle information, and available app-related features. Along with Apple CarPlay, the system includes Google built-in, which gives access to Google Assistant, Google Maps, and the Google Play store.
The XC40 Recharge has four USB-C ports, two up front and two in the rear.
All this audio goodness comes through a 250-watt 8-speaker Volvo High-Performance audio system.
Optional on the XC40 Recharge Core is a Climate Package with a heat pump, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, and headlight washers.

The Plus trim builds off the XC40 Recharge Core model and adds several features and upgrades.
In addition to the Core’s standard equipment, the Plus adds a panoramic power moonroof, LED fog lights, a 360-degree camera with front, rear, and side parking sensors, plus power-folding rear headrests.
Additional equipment includes upgraded seat upholstery with microfiber inserts, a power passenger seat, a 12-volt outlet in the cargo bay, an air purifier, a removable folding load floor, and a HomeLink garage door opener.
In addition to the Climate Package, buyers can configure the Plus trim with 20-inch alloy wheels and Pixel LED adaptive headlights.

The Ultimate also gets a 600-watt 13-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system.
Rounding out the Ultimate’s standard fare are Pixel LED adaptive headlights, cornering lights, headlights washers, rear-door power child locks, and 20-inch wheels.
The only option for the Ultimate is tailored wool-blend seat upholstery.
