The 2024 Volvo XC60 puts a unique twist on the compact luxury crossover. The B5 models derive power from a mild hybrid powertrain (MHEV) featuring a gas engine and an electric motor. In contrast, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Recharge T8 models have a more advanced hybrid system capable of traveling up to 36 miles solely on electric power. Each XC60 model offers three trims: Core, Plus, and Ultimate.
All-wheel drive (AWD) is standard, a bonus for those who regularly deal with snow and ice.
The XC60 isn’t as sporty as the Porsche Macan or BMW X3, but the Recharge trims offer superior horsepower and fuel economy. Other luxury entrants include the Mercedes-Benz GLC, Genesis GV70, and Lexus RX.

What’s New:
For 2024, Volvo drops the B6 and front-drive models from the XC60 lineup. An air purifier is added to the Plus trim, while the Ultimate gains laminated side windows. Black Stone paint is deleted and replaced by Vapour Grey.
Our Recommendation:
The base Volvo XC60 B5 Plus is well-equipped enough to satisfy most drivers. Its advantages over the B5 Core include adaptive cruise control and an available Harman Kardon audio system.

2024 Volvo XC60 B5 Core: $46,450
The first trim in the XC60 lineup is the B5 Core. The B5 portion of the equation means power comes from a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine paired with a mild-hybrid electric starter/generator producing 247 hp.
Being a Volvo, the XC60 has an ample helping of safety equipment. The mix includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, a blind-spot monitoring system with steering assist, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking.
You’ll also enjoy traffic sign assist, slippery road alert, automatic high-beam headlights, front and rear parking sensors, and a driver monitor that warns when detecting a drowsy or inattentive driver.
The handsome XC60 exterior contains several features unusual for an entry-level trim. There are adaptive LED headlights, LED fog lights with cornering function, power-retractable auto-dimming heated side mirrors, a panoramic sunroof with a power sunshade, and a hands-free power liftgate.
Rain-sensing wipers automatically activate when detecting moisture hitting the windshield, and a proximity key fob lets you unlock the doors and start the vehicle without removing the fob from your purse or pocket. We were particularly delighted at the XC60’s attention to detail, like the washer system built into the wiper blades that evenly distributes fluid over the entire windshield.
The exterior has 18-inch alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, black roof rails, and a rearview camera.
The Core’s cabin is equally well appointed, featuring a choice between convincing faux leather or textile cloth upholstery. Included are power front seats with 2-way power lumbar support and driver’s seat memory, heated front seats, and dual-zone automatic climate control with a system that automatically closes off the intake vents if it detects unsafe or unhealthy air outside the vehicle.
Power windows, power door locks, cruise control, and illuminated visor vanity mirrors come standard, with Iron Ore aluminum trim to complete the look.
The driver enjoys a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, configurable to show only the information desired. Directly to the right is a Google-based infotainment system featuring a 9-inch touchscreen. A 220-watt 10-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, a voice-activated assistant, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, four USB ports, and a wireless phone charger are all standard.
Optional equipment includes the Climate Package, which adds a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, and headlamp washers. You can also add rear-seat outboard booster cushions and 19-inch alloy wheels.

2024 Volvo XC60 B5 Core includes:
- Adaptive front lights – These LED headlights turn with the front wheels to light the way when taking curves or making turns.
- Proximity keyless entry – If the key fob is on your person, the doors automatically unlock when you approach. This function includes the power rear liftgate, which opens by swiping your foot under the rear bumper. Push-button start is paired with proximity keyless entry.
- Rain-sensing wipers – When the system senses moisture on the windshield, it automatically engages the wipers. The wiper speed adjusts according to the volume of the rain.
2024 XC60 B5 Plus: $50,950
Building on the B5 Core, the 2024 Volvo XC60 B5 Plus adds 19-inch alloy wheels, leather seating, wood interior accents, high-level ambient interior lighting, a surround-view camera with park assist front, side, and rear, plus a HomeLink transceiver.
Also included are adaptive cruise control, the Pilot Assist Driver Assistance System, power child locks, and power-folding rear head restraints.
You can still add the Climate Package, plus a 14-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound system.

There are only two notable differences between the Recharge T8 Core and the B5 Core. The PHEV powertrain features a 2.0-liter turbocharged/supercharged 4-cylinder engine joined with two electric motors.
The system generates 455 hp and can operate on electricity alone for up to 36 miles.
The second difference relates to features. The T8 gains a 12-volt outlet in the cargo bay but loses the B5’s LED fog lights and compact spare tire (it gets a tire repair kit/inflator instead). The Recharge T8 Core also gets an upgraded audio system with a 290-watt amp and 11 speakers.
