Maybach serves as a high-end subbrand of Mercedes-Benz, but did you know it used to be its own standalone marque? In an effort to compete with the likes of Rolls-Royce and Bentley, Daimler AG took a shot at its own ultra-premium car brand and called it Maybach. The history of the Maybach brand goes as far back as 1909 with a big brand revival in the late 1990s as a Rolls-Royce competitor. Unfortunately, it never got much traction as its own brand partially due to a lack of name recognition compared to its competitors and a lack of any high-performance coupes or convertibles. The brand’s only two models were the 57 and the 62 both of which were very opulent luxury sedans that are both a pleasure to drive and a pleasure to be driven around in.
