• Volvo has announced powertrains for its upcoming XC90 crossover
  • New XC90 will offer gasoline, plug-in hybrid and possibly diesel options
  • We're still waiting to see the new XC90's exterior styling

We're not yet sure what the upcoming 2015 Volvo XC90 will look like, but we already know what's under the hood. Volvo recently announced the powertrain lineup for its new XC90, detailing all the engines that it plans to offer when the fully redesigned luxury crossover goes on sale early next year.

The most impressive engine option is a plug-in hybrid powertrain capable of a muscular 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque -- huge numbers considering that it's a 4-cylinder. It's not your typical 4-cylinder, though: In addition to a turbocharger and a supercharger, the so-called T8 model also includes an electric motor that delivers up to 80 hp to the SUV's rear wheels. The result, Volvo says, is a purely electric range of up to 25 miles.

In addition to the new plug-in hybrid powertrain, the new XC90 will also offer the T6 gasoline-powered engine. This engine also uses both a supercharger and turbocharger to help make the 6-cylinder perform like a V8 but with much better fuel economy. Two new turbodiesel engines have also been mentioned, though Volvo hasn't confirmed if either will be headed for the U.S. market. The D4 model will offer 190 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, while the D5 boasts 225 hp and 347 lb-ft.

Beyond announcing the XC90's new engines, Volvo has also revealed a few other details about its upcoming midsize crossover over the last few months. Most recently, Volvo previewed the SUV's interior, which boasts a totally new look compared to the outgoing model's cabin. The 2015 XC90's high-tech interior is lined with leather and wood and features a huge center screen that will control nearly all vehicle functions.

Of course, we're most eager to see the exterior of the upcoming XC90, especially since it's one of the only aspects about the upcoming crossover that Volvo has yet to show off. Expect to see the brand finally pull the cover off the new XC90 later this year ahead of the model's on-sale date in early 2015.

What it means to you: The 2015 Volvo XC90 finally means a full redesign for the popular XC90, which first debuted in 2003.
