- Bentley has released an official teaser image showing its new SUV
- Details are unknown, though the SUV will likely reach dealers in 2016
- We expect 12-cylinder power and a hefty price tag
A Bentley SUV is on its way. The luxury automaker recently confirmed the upcoming arrival of its SUV with a new teaser image that shows the vehicle crossing a desert. The photo finally ends the will-they-or-won't-they speculation that began when Bentley showed off an SUV concept car at the Geneva Auto Show in 2012.
While the teaser image doesn't show much of the latest addition to the Bentley lineup, it gives an idea of what the SUV will look like. Expect a huge and characteristically Bentley grille, combined with soft lines and the brand's signature circular headlights. Beyond that, not much is known, though we'd expect that the Bentley SUV will look similar to the EXP 9 F Concept shown in Geneva in 2012.
Bentley hasn't announced many SUV-related details beyond the teaser image, but rumors are swirling around the brand's first SUV. Some sources are reporting that Bentley will offer the SUV with 4-, 5- or 7-passenger seating, meaning it may be available with three rows. That would set the Bentley apart from its chief rivals, the Mercedes G-Class and Range Rover, which are currently only offered with 2-row seating.
Bentley also hasn't announced what's under the SUV's hood, but many industry observers expect a 12-cylinder engine, standard 4-wheel drive and an automatic transmission. Like the W12-powered Continental GT, the Bentley SUV will likely boast around 570 horses, making it one of the most powerful SUVs on the market.
Pricing is also a question mark. Today's most expensive SUV, the long-wheelbase Range Rover Autobiography, starts around $144,000 with shipping. Given Bentley's market position and ultra-high-end aspirations, we'd expect the Bentley SUV to offer an even higher price tag, and that's before costly options.
