2015 Chevrolet COPO Camaro: SEMA Show

What Is It?

The 2015 Chevrolet COPO Camaro is the latest drag-strip-ready Camaro to come out of Chevy's high-performance division, and it's here on the floor at the 2014 SEMA Show. This marks the fourth year for the modern COPO Camaro, and as in previous years, it's limited to just 69 units. Why 69? Because 1969 was the first year that Chevrolet added the COPO (Central Office Production Order) designation to the Camaro dragster in order to certify it for professional drag-racing under the company banner. If you're wondering whether these beasts are street-legal, they are definitely not, and they don't even come with a VIN (vehicle identification number).

The 2015 Chevrolet COPO Camaro on display at SEMA sports Abalone White paint, gray and orange accents, and new-for-2015 COPO graphics. Under the hood is a 350-cubic-inch LSX V8 paired with a Whipple supercharger, a tandem that's good for a whopping 530 horsepower and a sky-high redline at 8,000 revolutions per minute. That's the top-of-the-line engine. Other options include naturally aspirated V8s ranging from 350 to 427 cu in. Every COPO Camaro is initially hand-built with production hardware, then outfitted with a roll cage approved by the National Hot Rod Association, a racing chassis and special sprint-optimized suspension components, including a solid rear axle for better "holeshots" off the line.

How Much?

We haven't heard yet, but last year's COPO Camaro started at just under $90,000 with similar equipment, so expect the 2015 version to be about the same.

When Can You Get It?

If you want one, you better get in line and cross your fingers. You'll have to register at on the Chevrolet website, and then hope that your name is randomly selected as one of the 69 winners. Should you be so lucky, you can probably take possession of your 2015 COPO Camaro sometime in the Spring of 2015.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

It's fast, it's exclusive and there's likely nothing better on the dragstrip from any mainstream automaker.

Other Cars to Consider

Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 -- A street-legal racer, the Camaro Z/28 boasts a 505-hp V8 and track-ready handling.

Used Ford Mustang GT -- Prior to 2015, the Mustang used a solid rear axle, just like the COPO Camaro, and that means better drag-strip launches. It's a solid drag machine on the cheap.
