2016 Jeep Wrangler Backcountry: LA Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler Backcountry is based on the Sahara model, but goes from the desert to the Arctic Circle by adding some winter capability. Rubicon rock rails are standard, Sahara side steps are available as a no-cost option, and the interior gets all-weather slush mats.

As for the rest of the Backcountry, it's fitted with off-road front and rear powder-coated bumpers, 17-inch Rubicon black-painted wheels and a black fuel-filler door. A black hardtop is standard, but it's possible to opt for a body-color hardtop.

Ah yes, body colors. The Backcountry is the only Wrangler available in Xtreme Purple. Luckily, there are alternatives: Hydro Blue, Black, Bright White and Granite Crystal.

The cabin is adorned with black vent rings, door handles and grab handles. The vinyl-wrapped console lid and door armrests come with gray stitching. The seats get black leather bolsters with black mesh inserts. And there's a 9-speaker premium Alpine audio system and Bluetooth connectivity as standard.

The Sahara hardware runs to a 3.6-liter V6 engine (with 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque), a 6-speed manual transmission and permanent all-wheel drive.

How Much?

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler Backcountry in 2-door guise starts at $36,585; the 4-door version starts at $40,385 (both prices include $995 destination). That's a premium of $4,700 over the regular Wrangler Sahara.

When Can You Get It?

December 2015

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

It's a special edition -- and there aren't that many other cars available in purple.

Other Cars to Consider

2015 Nissan Xterra -- There aren't any direct rivals to the Wrangler, but the Xterra has a good reputation for off-road prowess (doesn't come in purple, though).

Used Toyota FJ Cruiser -- The FJ is one of the few real off-road-capable vehicles that doesn't cost Range Rover money.
