2016 Toyota Corolla Special Edition: Chicago Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2016 Toyota Corolla Special Edition is a new version of Toyota's popular Corolla compact sedan. Limited to just 8,000 units to be produced later this year, the Corolla Special Edition features additional equipment and several eye-grabbing cosmetic changes.

The Corolla Special Edition will be easily recognizable on the outside thanks to unique 17-inch alloy wheels with a glossy black finish. Drivers who get the Special Edition in its unique Absolutely Red paint finish will also stand out, though the model is also available in Black Sand Pearl and Super White.

Cosmetic upgrades aren't limited to the Corolla Special Edition's exterior, however. Inside, the small Toyota includes red-accented dash and door trim, along with unique Special Edition floor mats and sporty black seats with red accent stitching. And the changes aren't all cosmetic, because the Corolla Special Edition also adds a standard smart key entry system with push-button start, while options include a power sunroof and Toyota's Entune system with navigation.

How Much?

Official pricing isn't yet available, but we suspect that the Corolla Special Edition will carry a slight premium over the Corolla S, which starts around $20,000 with shipping.

When Can You Get It?

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

Although we already think the Toyota Corolla is a highly competent small car, the 2016 Toyota Corolla Special Edition adds several unique cosmetic touches that allow the somewhat staid Corolla to especially stand out. We suspect many drivers will like the sporty black wheels, while the red contrast stitching is also a nice touch. If you're looking to take advantage of traditional Corolla dependability in a more unique package, this is probably the car for you.

Other Cars to Consider

2015 Kia Forte -- The compact Kia Forte may not offer the standout styling of the Corolla Special Edition, but it does boast a lot of equipment, reasonable pricing and a surprisingly roomy interior. You'll also get Kia's famous 10-year warranty.

2015 Mazda3 -- The sporty Mazda3 offers better handling than the Toyota Corolla, along with handsome styling. Although there's no Special Edition model, you might find that the Mazda3's equipment and appearance are enough to sway you from the Toyota.

Used Ford Fusion -- Like the Corolla Special Edition, the attractive Ford Fusion boasts bold styling and an alluring design. It also handles well, and we love its wide range of available gadgets. A new one costs more than a Corolla, though, so you may want to look for a used model.

Used Toyota Camry -- The Toyota Camry SE, which we assume stands for Special Edition, offers many handsome cosmetic upgrades, including a sporty body kit and alloy wheels. Camry pricing is steeper than Corolla pricing, though, so you may want to check out a used model.
