2017 GMC Canyon Denali and 2016 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate: LA Auto Show

What Are They?

The 2017 GMC Canyon Denali and the 2016 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate are the latest members of GMC’s upscale Denali family, which is a high-end trim level available on all the brand’s products. While the Canyon is gaining a Denali version for the first time, the new Sierra Denali Ultimate takes the already popular Sierra Denali to an entirely new level.

Let’s start with the Canyon. On the outside, the Canyon Denali receives much of the same treatment as GMC’s other Denali models, including larger mirrors and a lot of chrome. It’s the same story inside, where the truck boasts heated and cooled seats, improved interior materials, a revised gauge cluster and a host of Denali badges to remind you that you’re not in a regular ol’ Canyon. GMC says the Canyon Denali will be offered only as a crew cab, though shoppers can choose between the 3.6-liter V6 or 2.8-liter turbodiesel 4-cylinder.

As for the Sierra Denali Ultimate, the new truck builds on the success and luxury of the current GMC Sierra Denali. Designed to be the “ultimate expression of the Sierra Denali,” the Ultimate model adds lane-keep assist, automatic headlights and power steps to access the forward section of the truck’s bed. Also standard are chrome front tow hooks, a power sunroof and 22-inch wheels instead of the regular Denali’s standard 20-inchers.

How Much?

GMC hasn’t yet announced pricing for either the Canyon Denali or the Sierra Denali Ultimate. We suspect the Canyon Denali will start around $40,000 (well above the Canyon SLT crew cab’s base price of around $35,600 with 4-wheel drive), while the Sierra Denali Ultimate will likely hold a premium of at least a few thousand dollars over the standard Sierra Denali’s $55,500 price.

When Can You Get Them?

Both trucks will go on sale next year. The Sierra Denali Ultimate will be released in early 2016, while the Canyon Denali will come out near the end of the year.

Add Them to Your Shopping List Because…

The luxury pickup-truck market is seriously taking off, and now every pickup-making brand seems to be involved, from GMC to Toyota. Denali was the original, and the 2017 GMC Canyon Denali and 2016 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate offer some big upgrades over mainstream models helping them stand out from regular pickups. If you want your truck to provide the ultimate in luxury features and equipment, a Denali should be on your shopping list.

Other Cars to Consider

2016 Ford F-150 Platinum — Ford’s upscale F-150 Platinum is a direct rival to the Sierra Denali Ultimate, touting high-end equipment and upscale interior materials. Used models will also rival the Canyon Denali.

2016 RAM 1500 Laramie Limited — The full-size RAM 1500 Laramie Limited is the top trim level of the boldly styled RAM 1500 pickup. It touts automatic high beams, self-leveling air suspension, a navigation system and a lot of wood, chrome and leather trim.

2016 Toyota Tundra Platinum — The Tundra Platinum will also be a close rival to the Sierra Denali Ultimate, thanks to a long list of features including heated and ventilated front seats, a power sunroof and a 12-speaker JBL sound system.
