2018 Honda Odyssey: Detroit Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2018 Honda Odyssey marks the beginning of the popular minivan’s fifth generation. It boasts a new look, a new powertrain and a host of new features, including one that improves in-cabin communication.

We’ll start with that one, since it’s probably the most interesting new touch in the new Odyssey. Dubbed CabinWatch and CabinTalk, the new feature allows you to monitor the actions of passengers seated in back (CabinWatch) using a camera that relays a feed to the front touchscreen. Drivers who don’t like what they see in back can push a button and deliver their voice over the car’s speakers (CabinTalk), imploring kids in the back to keep their hands to themselves, for instance.

The Odyssey also offers a few other innovative features minivan shoppers will enjoy. Apps allow passengers to control the stereo, adjust the climate control and even check the distance remaining in the trip, while a new Magic Slide seat lets you remove the middle seat in the second row and slide the two remaining second-row seats together.

On the outside, the Odyssey also makes some major changes, losing its pronounced rear-window kink for a more gradual one. It features a few more stylish lines than its predecessor, but the overall shape is more traditional. Inside, major changes involve losing the outgoing model’s dual-screen infotainment setup and a new push-button transmission selector in the center control stack.

The 2018 Honda Odyssey also makes some changes under the hood. The new model still uses a 3.5-liter V6, but it now boasts 280 horsepower — a big jump from the outgoing model’s 248 hp. The Odyssey also offers 9- or 10-speed automatic transmissions to replace the outgoing van’s 6-speed automatic.

How Much?

Honda hasn’t yet announced pricing, but we wouldn’t expect a huge jump over the outgoing model’s base price of $30,900 with shipping.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because…

The Odyssey is among the best family cars on the market, and the 2018 model looks to improve on a winning formula. It offers more features, more power, more gears, new styling and more innovations — and that means it deserves a spot on the shopping list of any shopper interested in transportation for the whole family.

Other Cars to Consider

2017 Chrysler Pacifica — The Chrysler Pacifica is a great new minivan that offers reasonable pricing and lots of technology. Soon, it will be the only minivan on the market with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

2017 Kia Sedona — The newly redesigned Kia Sedona is an excellent minivan that more shoppers should consider. It boasts a long list of cutting-edge features, as well as Kia’s excellent warranty.

2017 Toyota Sienna — The aging Toyota Sienna was a strong rival to the outgoing Odyssey, but with the latest Odyssey and its improved features, Toyota’s van is now in dire need of an update.

  1. …broadcast your voice over the car’s speakers…

IT’S A MINIVAN NOT AN AIRPLANE! If you have an Odyssey, you’re a parent… just yell louder!
  2. …but still no plan on offering All-wheel-drive? Crazy. They could have slammed the door on Toyota and counter-punched the Pacifica.
