2018 Volvo V90: Detroit Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2018 Volvo V90 is the wagon version of the S90 large luxury sedan. As their names suggest, these cars share a platform with the highly acclaimed XC90 SUV.

We have already met the V90 in Cross Country form, with roof rails, all-wheel drive and a raised ride height, at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show last November. Now the regular version makes its North American debut in Detroit.

Throughout its history, Volvo has always made wagons an important part of its lineup. Some of them were so squared off that people might have thought the designers were previously employed by Lego. That's clearly not the case with the V90. As good as it looks in photos, it's even more impressive in three dimensions.

Passenger space is plentiful, and maximum cargo capacity with the rear seats folded down is 53.9 cu ft. And since this is a Volvo, it's also packed with advanced safety functions, including a semi-autonomous feature.

Both drivetrains have a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and an 8-speed automatic transmission. The front-drive T5 uses a turbocharger for 250 horsepower; the all-wheel-drive T6 uses turbocharging and supercharging to make 316 hp.

How Much?

To be announced. The 2017 S90 sedan starts at around $47,000, so expect something a tad above that.

When Can You Get It?

The 2018 Volvo V90 goes on sale summer 2017. But because Volvo dealers in the United States will only have the Cross Country version in stock, the normal V90 will need to be specially ordered. One way of accomplishing this is by using the company's online Concierge service. There's also the choice of going to Sweden to take delivery and then shipping it over.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

Wagons go against the SUV/crossover grain yet still offer superb utility. In the V90's case, it also comes with loaded with luxury appointments.

Other Cars to Consider

2017 Mercedes-Benz E400 wagon -- Although several luxury carmakers offer wagon variants in other parts of the world, the United States only has the V90 and this E-Class.

2017 Audi Allroad -- This is one size down (it's an A4 variant) and is more of a Volvo V60 Cross Country rival, but it still mixes prestige with practicality.

Used Lexus RX -- If forging an individual path seems like too much hard work, just do what virtually every other luxury/utility-vehicle buyer has done and get an RX crossover.
