2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt: Detroit Auto Show

What Is It?

Ford is adding the limited-edition 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt to its Mustang portfolio. It's the third-generation Bullitt, paying homage to the 1968 Mustang GT fastback that starred with Steve McQueen in the 1968 movie "Bullitt." In that movie was arguably the greatest car-chase sequence of all time. For 10 minutes, the Bullitt Mustang flew over the hills of San Francisco, hot on the heels of a Dodge Charger.

Powering the 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt will be a 475-horsepower (maybe more) 5.0-liter V8 grinding out 420 lb-ft of torque, with a top speed of 163 miles per hour -- this is 8 mph more than the regular Mustang GT. Manhandling engine output to the rear wheels will be a 6-speed manual transmission controlled by a shift lever topped with a white cue-ball shift knob. This is the only transmission available. Hey, it's what Steve would have wanted.

Ford will package all the Mustang GT Premium and Performance package content into the limited-edition car. The exterior color, of course, will be Dark Highland Green. For non-traditionalists, Ford will also offer Shadow Black. Badging will be kept to a minimum, just like on the original Bullitt car. An active-valve exhaust system with Blacked NitroPlate exhaust tips will carry a throatier note than other Mustangs in the lineup. Black 19-inch mag wheels round out the exterior.

Inside, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel and a special 12-in LCD instrument cluster lead the enhancements. Recaro black-leather-trimmed seats are an option.

How Much?

No official pricing yet, but think in the $50,000-plus neighborhood.

When Can You Get It?

Sometime this summer.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

If Steve was still around, he'd want one. Hot looking, meaner than a snake and loaded with high-tech goodies, what's not to like? It's the ideal showoff car.

Other Cars to Consider

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 -- Barn-storming acceleration, surprising value and decent ride.

Dodge Challenger SRT 392 -- Usable backseat, large trunk, hot-shoe acceleration and decent road manners.

Lexus LC 500 -- High-end cabin, sporty handling, strong V8 and plenty of convenience features.
