What Is It?
Introducing its 2019 Genesis G70 at the New York Auto Show, Genesis officially joins the entry-level luxury-performance segment. Don’t expect German rivals to open their arms. Not only will the G70 undercut the price of its European competitors, but shoppers searching for a smaller sedan in the luxury-performance arena who want to stir the transmission will be thrilled a 6-speed manual tranny is available in the G70.
Rounding out the Genesis lineup that already includes the G80, G80 Sport and top-of-the-line G90, the G70 offers the choice of two engines and five grades. Anchored by Advanced, the trims continue up to the well-equipped Sport. The base engine is a 252-horsepower 2-liter 4-cylinder turbo; while the bigger engine is a 356-hp twin-turbo V6. Both are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted shift paddles and launch control. Rear-wheel drive is standard with all-wheel drive offered as an option with either engine. RWD 2L versions are eligible for the optional 6-speed manual transmission.
Liberal use of aluminum helps manage weight. All G70s ride on a MacPherson strut multilink front and multilink rear suspension with “performance-oriented geometry.” Available with both engines, a Dynamic package includes a limited-slip differential managing torque distribution across the rear axle when cornering for better control. Available Brembo brakes — 4-piston front and 2-piston rear — bring the G70 to a stop.
A battery of driver-assist/safety features are included in the standard Genesis Active Safety Control. Forward-collision avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring, lane-keep assist and driver attention warning are all part of the package.
Outside, the 2019 Genesis G70 will come in eight colors. Inside, the premium cabin features real brushed aluminum, quilted Nappa leather seats and stitched, soft-touch surfaces. An upscale audio option is the 15-speaker Lexicon surround-sound system with QuantumLogic.
No pricing yet, but the starting price will certainly be less than the G80’s $41,750.
