2019 Subaru Ascent: LA Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2019 Subaru Ascent is not only brand-spanking new, but it's also the largest crossover the company has ever built. It has seating for up to eight occupants.

For a company that provides all-wheel drive as standard in virtually everything it makes (the sporty rear-drive BRZ coupe is the exception), it's surprising that Subaru hasn't been a big player in this area of the SUV market. With any luck, that's all about to change.

The Ascent comes with three rows of seating. The optional captain's chairs in the second row puts the occupant count down to seven. The rear side doors open wide (75 degrees) for easy access to the third row. Tri-zone automatic climate control is standard. There are 19 cup/bottle holders and four USB ports (or eight USB ports in the top Touring trim).

If anyone has found a Subaru to have a somewhat noisy cabin in the past, they'll be pleased to learn the Ascent has acoustically treated front side windows and windshield among other soundproofing measures. The vehicle is also based on the company's new global platform, which is strong and refined.

Subaru's EyeSight suite of safety enhancements (including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision mitigation and lane-departure alert) is standard. Among the optional technology features are Wi-Fi, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration, blind spot monitoring, steering-responsive headlights, high-beam assist, and reverse automatic braking.

Maximum cargo space is 72.6 cu ft. Roof rails are also standard and the Ascent can tow up to 5,000 pounds. Under the hood, meanwhile, is an all-new 2.4-liter engine in Subaru's trademark flat-4 configuration making 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque.

How Much?

Nothing official yet. Looking at the rivals, it seems a starting price in the region of $30,000 might be a good guess.

When Can You Get It?

The 2019 Subaru Ascent goes on sale summer 2018.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because…

Diehard Subaru fans (of which there are many) who have expanded their families will be rejoicing because of this new vehicle. For the rest of us, the Ascent should provide a tempting price/equipment proposition.

Other Cars to Consider

2018 Chevrolet Traverse -- Pleasant and well priced.

2018 Ford Explorer -- Seats up to seven and the third row isn't that roomy. But the Explorer is a big seller and there are some useful drivetrain options.

2018 Honda Pilot -- Efficient, competent and -- to have all the safety equipment -- pricey. Should hold its value well, though.

2018 Toyota Highlander -- Well made, decently equipped. A hybrid version is available.

2018 Volkswagen Atlas -- A 7-seater only, but spacious (maximum cargo space: 97 cu ft.).
