Jaguar I-PACE Concept: LA Auto Show

What Is It?

The Jaguar I-PACE Concept is a fully electric luxury SUV concept vehicle. Although production isn't assured, it's undoubtedly aimed squarely at the popular (and pricey) Tesla Model X fully electric luxury crossover.

On the outside, the I-PACE takes design language from the brand's F-PACE SUV and tweaks it for a more futuristic, aerodynamic look. The sloping rear, for instance, almost gives the I-PACE the look of a sedan, while large wheels and a giant greenhouse provide it with an especially modern aesthetic. Inside, the I-PACE isn't as futuristic as you might think, owing to the fact that Jaguar actually plans to make this vehicle (or something very close to it). While the interior has a few more screens and high-end surfaces than a standard Jaguar, its design certainly doesn't look impossible.

Most important, however, is what's under the hood -- or, in this case, what's attached to both axles. The I-PACE uses two 200-horsepower electric motors, one attached to each axle, for a total output of 400 hp. All-wheel drive comes standard. Jaguar says the I-PACE's battery pack is built into the crossover's floor and can propel it up to 220 miles between charges.

Will They Ever Sell It?

If Jaguar is serious about bringing a fully electric SUV to the market -- and the automaker certainly seems to be -- it could look a lot like the I-PACE. While its cab-forward design is futuristic, and its huge wheels probably won't fly in production, we wouldn't be shocked to see the I-PACE reach showrooms without serious alterations to the overall look.

Why It's Important

The Jaguar I-PACE Concept is important because it shows that some automakers -- and not just Tesla -- are thinking about life beyond the plug-in hybrid that's capable of doing 20 miles on a single charge. By showing off the I-PACE in Los Angeles, Jaguar has seemingly thrown down the gauntlet in announcing that it's developing a fully-electric SUV that offers a Tesla-like, futuristic design and a similar overall range to the vaunted Model X.
