Mazda Koeru Concept: Frankfurt Auto Show

What Is It?

The Mazda Koeru concept is an SUV concept car with eye-grabbing styling. Taking its name from the Japanese term for "going beyond," the Koeru concept likely previews the direction Mazda plans to take with its next-generation CX-9 crossover.

On the outside, the Koeru concept blends traditionally futuristic concept-car styling with several unique Mazda design cues. The sweeping lines, narrow headlights and taillights and unique grille all scream Mazda, while the huge wheels and narrow window lines are more characteristic of a typical concept car.

Inside, the Koeru concept is surprisingly tame for a concept car, boasting a fairly typical Mazda cabin we feel could be nearly production-ready. The concept car offers high-quality materials, a simple center control stack and a handsome dashboard design. The only concept-car items seem to be the uniquely shaped gear lever and the infotainment screen.

Although Mazda hasn't announced what's powering the Koeru concept, the brand says the crossover uses its latest SKYACTIV technology. Technology is mostly unknown, though Mazda has announced the Koeru uses the most recent version of the brand's Mazda Connect infotainment system.

Will They Ever Sell It?

In this form, no. We suspect the Koeru concept previews the upcoming CX-9 crossover, which is in desperate need of a redesign. As a result, we suspect many of the Koeru's design elements will find their way into the CX-9.

Why It's Important

Mazda has quietly built up impressive sales numbers over the last few years, and they've done so without a credible family crossover, as the CX-9 is one of the oldest models on the market. The Mazda Koeru concept previews what's to come for the brand in the midsize-crossover segment, showing Mazda plans to launch another product that could take off like the popular Mazda3, Mazda6 and CX-5.

The Koeru concept is also important because it hints at Mazda's styling direction for the next-generation CX-9. Because the current CX-9 was released several years ago, it doesn't use Mazda's latest design language, but the Koeru shows the next-generation version will undoubtedly feature the same creases, lines and styling we've come to appreciate from other Mazda models.
