- New model looks like a “baby brother” to the CLS
- Concept will likely be revised to create the upcoming Mercedes CLA
- Power comes from a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine
An all-new concept car from Mercedes could preview an upcoming model slated to arrive in the US next year. The automaker chose this year’s Beijing Auto Show to reveal its new Concept Style Coupe, showing off the sedan’s sweeping lines and futuristic design after revealing several teaser images earlier this month.
On the outside, the Concept Style Coupe shares many traits with the Mercedes CLS, which entered its second generation in 2011. Prominent design features include sculpted character lines down either side, an aggressive front grille and swoopy styling that gives the four-door sedan a coupe-like appearance. Inside, the sedan features a modern cabin with four bucket seats, a rear center console and a unique lime green trim.
If the Concept Style Coupe sounds a lot like the CLS – which also features swoopy coupe-like styling, four doors, four bucket seats and a rear center console – the resemblance is intentional. Many industry observers believe the concept previews the upcoming Mercedes CLA, which is expected to include many of the CLS’s unique characteristics in a smaller package. Indeed, Mercedes says the Concept Style Coupe is just two inches longer than its compact C-Class sedan, while the CLS is closer in size to the midsize E-Class.
Under the hood, the Concept Style Coupe retains its status as a baby brother to the CLS with a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine producing 211 horsepower. Mercedes says the sedan also features a new 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, which will likely be the only transmission available when the concept is revised for production.
According to Mercedes, other unique features found in the Concept Style Coupe include a large panoramic glass roof, dual exhausts, 20-inch alloy wheels and a revised version of the automaker’s COMAND navigation system designed to remotely update through a wireless smartphone link. The sedan also includes the automaker’s 4Matic all-wheel drive system, direct fuel injection and backlit air vents that change color depending on the climate control temperature set by occupants.
Although Mercedes has yet to confirm whether the Concept Style Coupe will reach production, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the automaker unveil a finalized version – bearing only slight revisions from the concept and the CLA moniker – by the end of the year.
What it means to you: The rakish “quad coupe” styling of the CLS may soon be available in a smaller, less expensive form.
