Nissan NV Cargo X Concept: Chicago Auto Show

What Is It?

The Nissan NV Cargo X Concept is the kind of vehicle that would be really useful if Grizzly Adams ever ordered anything from Amazon. It's based on the production Nissan NV2500HD van, but like almost any set of wheels with extensive off-road capability, it's based on a fully boxed ladder frame.

Naturally, it has an all-wheel-drive system. Motivation comes from a 5.0-liter turbocharged diesel V8 from Cummins (the same engine that's in the Nissan Titan XD pickup). It has a brawny 555 lb-ft of torque, which is especially useful in providing low-end muscle while crawling over rocks.

The NV Cargo X runs on 37-inch all-terrain tires, the special long-travel off-road front suspension has a raised ride height for 22 inches of ground clearance (the rear suspension is the regular van's leaf springs), and notice how the lower front lip has been removed to help clear obstacles and house a winch.

Kept inside the 234 cu ft. of cargo space is an on-board air system, a rope, a full-size spare wheel, a high-lift jack, a portable welder and a tool bag.

The NV Cargo X was developed in partnership with Ian Johnson, of the "Xtreme Off-Road" TV series on the Spike channel. Johnson said he thought the NV could be an able off-roader and also "its own support vehicle."

Will They Ever Sell It?

No matter how intriguing it might be, this is a one-off project.

Why It's Important

We're all familiar with the idea of a "halo car," the most desirable model that manages to sprinkle its magic dust on more affordable versions. The Nissan NV Cargo X Concept acts as a "halo van," splashing magic mud on the NV commercial van range.
