Subaru Viziv Tourer Concept: Geneva Auto Show

What Is It?

The Subaru Viziv Tourer Concept is the newest design study to bear the Viziv name. A sleek sedan version debuted at last year's Tokyo show, and there have been others before that. This one blurs the lines between hatchback, wagon and crossover body styles.

Looking at the profile and the rear, there's an almost Volvo-esque vibe to it. And that company has also been known to straddle a couple of niches with its Cross Country versions. Like the Tokyo concept, this one has side cameras instead of mirrors.

It's the Tourer part of the name that gives this Viviz concept its particular character. This is a 4-seater only, with a fine balance between rear headroom requirements, smart lines and aerodynamic efficiency. So it's easy to imagine taking long trips in this car. Especially since it also looks like it can take a useful amount of luggage.

Note the two cameras (assuming they're cameras) above the windshield. These would be linked to Subaru's EyeSight array of driver technologies, making those long drives less tiring.

Will They Ever Sell It?

Concepts often herald an eventual production model. It's too soon to tell if that will happen here, but this might easily be the forerunner to a new generation of Impreza hatchbacks or a new Outback crossover.

However, some of the advanced driver aids contained within this concept -- such as radar-based adaptive cruise control and semi-autonomous features -- will be available in production Subaru models from 2020.

Why It's Important

The Subaru Viziv Tourer Concept links the present to the future. The company says this vehicle has the all-wheel drive and flat-4 engine configuration that are both Subaru hallmarks. Intriguingly, Subaru has hinted that it might start using regular inline-4 engines (where the pistons move up and down instead of side to side). And upcoming models may have a hybrid aspect to their drivetrains. Subaru isn't known for being frivolous, so perhaps something resembling this car might actually make it to the streets in the next few years.
