2006-2008 Lexus RX 400h
The hybrid variant of the popular Lexus RX was one of the very first hybrid luxury SUVs on the market and it’s still attractive today. This generation of the Lexus RX hybrid returned 25 miles per gallon in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, which might not sound super efficient, but it’s good for its class and a big improvement over the non-hybrid variant of the RX. 2008-2013 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid
We wouldn’t blame you for not associating the Chevrolet Tahoe full-size SUV with good fuel economy, but there was a hybrid version of this brute from 2008-2013. Its other General Motors stablemates (the GMC Yukon and the Cadillac Escalade) were also hybridized during this generation. Its fuel economy rating of 20 mpg city/23 mpg hwy is quite good for this class, which is normally not very efficient. It also doesn’t sacrifice much in power and capability with its hybrid V8 making 332 horsepower with a maximum towing capacity of 6,200 pounds. 2008-2010 Toyota Highlander Hybrid
If you like the idea of a hybrid SUV with three rows of seats, but don’t quite need something the size of a Tahoe, then the Toyota Highlander Hybrid might be in your sweet spot. This midsize crossover returns 28 mpg both in the city and on the highway, which is outstanding for a vehicle this size. The Highlander also packs in minivan like practicality when equipped with the optional third row of seats with room for the whole family and their stuff to boot. 2008-2012 Ford Escape Hybrid
The second-generation Ford Escape is a good compact SUV and its hybrid variant made it more fuel efficient returning up to 34 mpg city/31 mpg hwy. This generation of the Escape is notable for being one of the roomier offerings in its segment with a spacious back seat making it a good family vehicle. Another thing we like about the Escape Hybrid is that there isn’t much of a noticeable difference in the performance or driving experience between the normal gas-powered model and the hybrid. A fancier option is the Mercury Mariner Hybrid, which is mechanically identical to the Escape Hybrid, but was a bit more luxurious, had a classier look, and is priced very similarly on the used market. 2017-2019 Kia Niro
There are only a handful of used Kia Niro models on Autotrader for less than $15,000 as of this writing, but this is definitely one to keep an eye out for if you’re shopping for affordable used hybrid SUVs. By far the most modern SUV on our list, the Niro has a low starting price when new, which makes it a great value on the used market after a few years of depreciation.
