6 Best Used Family Sedans Under $20,000

A midsize sedan is often one of the most sensible vehicles you can buy. These vehicles offer a great mix of efficiency, space and driving comfort, and while SUVs have exploded in popularity in recent years, there’s still a place in this world for the venerable midsize sedan. Below, we’ll highlight six of our favorite used family sedans under $20,000 for 2020.

2018 Toyota Camry

2018 Toyota Camry

The best-selling sedan on the market, the Camry, sets the standard in this segment. Offering reliability, efficiency and a smart array of standard active safety features, a gently used Camry makes an excellent $20,000 car. The Camry was all new for the 2018 model year, and thanks to depreciation, it’s currently possible to pick up a decently equipped preowned Camry from the model’s current generation for around $20,000. For your money, expect to find a mid-tier 4-cylinder LE or SE model. Buyers wanting the V6 or Hybrid will want to look back to the Camry’s previous generation, which was offered from 2012-2017. Opt for the 2018-or-newer model, though, and you’ll get such active safety features as radar cruise control and automatic high beams. There are currently over 1,000 gently used 2018 or 2019 Camrys listed for sale on Autotrader for around $20,000. Find a Toyota Camry for sale

2018 Honda Accord

2018 Honda Accord

Long the second most popular midsize sedan in the U.S., just behind the Camry, the Accord offers a slightly nicer, more upscale experience than the Camry. Like the Toyota, the Honda Accord was fully redesigned for the 2018 model year and brought with it all-new styling that incorporated a gradually sloping roofline, a modern infotainment system and a variety of active safety features. Speaking of infotainment, the Accord offered both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility right out of the gate in 2018, while the Camry didn’t add CarPlay until 2019 and didn’t add Android Auto until 2020. Additionally, the Accord is also one of just a handful of family cars that still offers a manual transmission, making it a great choice for anyone who wants a more involving experience when it comes to their midsize sedan. Right now on Autotrader, there are over 1,000 2018-or-newer Accords listed for $20,000 or less. Find a Honda Accord for sale

2018 Subaru Legacy

2018 Subaru Legacy

While a number of its competitors have added it as an option in recent years, the Legacy sedan is known for offering all-wheel drive as standard, and has done so for many years. The fifth-generation Legacy, offered from 2014 through 2019, offered a good mix of active safety features to go with its standard AWD system. Under the hood you’ll find either a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder making 175 horsepower or a more potent 3.6-liter V6 that made 252 hp. Beyond standard AWD, the Legacy was available with Subaru’s “EyeSight” suite of active safety tech as early as 2015. Right now, there are over 1,000 fifth-gen Legacies listed on Autotrader for around $20,000. Find a Subaru Legacy for sale

2018 Mazda6

2018 Mazda6

As far as used family sedans go, the Mazda6 offers an upscale experience, a theme that carries throughout the rest of Mazda’s lineup. There are currently in excess of 1,000 2016-2018 Mazda6s listed for sale on Autotrader for around $20,000. Over 200 of these are upper-trim Grand Touring models, which come with power-heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, a sunroof, a digital driver’s display and adaptive headlights. Even in its mid-tier trim levels, though, the Mazda6 offers upscale materials, great handling and a better overall driving experience than any of its competitors. Find a Mazda for sale

2018 Nissan Altima

2018 Nissan Altima

Often the third-place finisher in overall sales behind the Camry and Accord, the Altima is similar to the offerings of Toyota and Honda but comes in a more value-oriented package. While an all-new Altima came out for the 2019 model year, it’s easy to find a nicely equipped example from the Altima’s previous generation, offered from the 2013 through 2018 model years, for around $20,000. In past reviews of the fifth-generation Altima, it was found to have notably comfortable seats, while its optional 270 hp V6 delivered great power for the era. Right now on Autotrader, there are thousands of fifth-generation Altimas listed for $20,000 or less. Many are updated 2016 to 2018 models, while around 150 are face-lifted examples with the V6 engine. Find a Nissan Altima for sale

2018 Ford Fusion

2018 Ford Fusion

Ford recently announced that the Fusion sedan would be discontinued as part of the company’s shifting focus toward crossovers and SUVs. Production has soldiered on, though, and the Fusion is technically still sold new as a 2020 model, albeit with simplified trim levels and powertrains. A few years ago, though, the Fusion was offered in a variety of trims and offered compelling features like optional AWD and a 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 engine that made 325 hp, features that helped the Fusion to stand out from the pack. Right now on Autotrader, there are loads of $20,000 Fusions listed, many from the more recent 2017 through 2019 model years. Around 150 are even the performance-oriented Sport model, which paired AWD with the turbo V6. Find a Ford Fusion for sale
