7 Best Used Large SUVs Under $20,000

If you need an affordable SUV that can haul a lot of people and all their things, you’ve come to the right place.  Here we’ll highlight 7 affordable large SUVs available for around $20,000.

1. 2014 Ford Expedition

2014 Ford Expedition

Those looking for a used Expedition for around $20,000 would be wise to target an early example from the Expedition’s third generation, which lasted all the way from the 2007 through the 2017 model years.  During this time, both standard and ‘Extended Length’, or ‘EL’ models were offered.  Think Tahoe vs. Suburban, or Yukon vs. Yukon XL for an idea of the size difference between the two.  Expect to find something from the 2012 to 2014 model years, assuming you want four-wheel drive.  If you’re willing to accept two-wheel drive, it’s possible to find sub-100,000-mile options from as recently as 2017 at our desired price point.  Find a Ford Expedition for sale

2. 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe

2007-2014 Chevrolet Tahoe

Chevrolet’s two full-size SUVs, the Tahoe and Suburban, are virtually identical; both have historically used a body-on-frame construction with a truck-like solid rear axle, utilized V8 engines, and offered good capability when it comes to towing and hauling.  The Tahoe is just the shorter of the two vehicles, and thus offers a little less interior space.  It’s still huge though; the third-gen Tahoe, offered from 2007 through 2014, comes with up to 109 cu ft of cargo space with both the second and third rows folded. For around $20,000, we’d seek out a 2012-2014 model.  Find a Chevrolet Tahoe for sale

3. 2012 Chevrolet Suburban

2012 Chevrolet Suburban

The Suburban is to the Tahoe what the Yukon XL is to the Yukon; thanks to an extended wheelbase and longer cabin, it offers an 28 additional cu ft of interior storage volume than its shorter sibling.  All of the Suburban’s extra room comes in the form of more space behind the third row.  Expect to pay $1,000 to $2,000 more for a Suburban than you would a Tahoe.  As far as large SUVs go, it doesn’t get any bigger than the Suburban. 4. 2013 GMC Yukon

2013 GMC Yukon

The Yukon is effectively a Tahoe wearing different badging and ever-so-slightly-different styling.  GMC products do differentiate themselves from their Chevrolet counterparts by offering the upscale Denali trim, which comes in the form of chrome exterior bits, blingier wheels, and a slightly nicer interior.  Either way, expect a good $20,000 Yukon to hail from the 2013 model year, just like the Tahoe, although if it’s a Denali you’re after, include the 2010-2013 model years in your search. 5. 2012 GMC Yukon XL

2012 GMC Yukon XL

As the Suburban is to the Tahoe, the Yukon XL is to the Yukon.  Looking at it another way – the Yukon XL is basically the same vehicle as the Suburban, just wearing different badges and slightly different styling up front.  If you couldn’t already guess, GMC’s Denali trim is available on the Yukon XL as well.  Pricing of a used Yukon XL will be similar to that of a used Suburban; expect to pay around $1-$2k more for a Yukon XL than you would an identically-equipped Yukon. 6. 2014 Toyota Sequoia

2014 Toyota Sequoia

The Sequoia shares its platform with the venerable Toyota Tundra, offering room for up to eight people and all of their things.   In terms of size, it sits in between the Tahoe and Suburban.  Buyers who choose the Suburban over one of the other large SUVs on our list will likely do so because of Toyota’s reputation for strong reliability, and between its stout 5.7-liter V8 and quality construction, it isn’t out of the question for a Sequoia to accumulate 400,000 miles or more.  The Sequoia went largely unchanged from 2008 through 2018, so used pricing tends to be pretty dependent on mileage. 7. 2015 Nissan Armada

2015 Nissan Armada

The first-generation Nissan Armada was offered from 2004 through 2015.  It shares many of its components with the Titan; Nissan’s full-size pickup.  Though it isn’t quite as big as the mammoth Toyota Sequoia, the Armada offers a similar V8 engine and good reliability.  If you’re looking to pick up a used Armada for around $20,000, look to the 2013 through 2015 model years.
