2014 Kia Sedona Receives 5-Star Safety Rating

  • Top 5-star overall safety rating for Kia’s minivan
  • Six standard airbags
  • Lower price than some competitors

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced a top, 5-star overall safety rating for the 2014 Kia Sedona. After taking the 2013 model year off, Kia’s minivan is back for the new model year with styling and feature updates and, perhaps more importantly, a 5-star overall safety rating from NHTSA that matches the top ratings of pricier rivals such as the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna.

The updated Sedona relies on several standard safety features to protect occupants. Front and front side airbags, along with side-curtain airbags for all three rows, help to prevent injury in a crash. Electronic brake force distribution and electronic stability control help drivers avoid collisions.

Ratings in three categories — frontal crash, side crash and rollover — contribute to a vehicle’s overall score. The 2014 Kia Sedona scored a top 5-star rating in both frontal and side crash tests, while achieving a 4-star rating in the rollover category.

A closer look at the ratings reveals further impressive results for the latest Sedona. NHTSA lists individual results for the driver and front-seat passenger in both frontal and side tests. Sedona earned 5-star ratings for both positions in both tests. By comparison, the 2014 Toyota Sienna earned only a 3-star rating for passenger safety in the frontal crash test while still receiving a 5-star overall rating.

The 2013 Honda Odyssey earned a 5-star rating, but NHTSA has yet to test its 2014 model year replacement. The Nissan Quest remains unrated by NHTSA, while another rival, the Chrysler Town & Country, earned a 4-star overall rating.

In delivering value, the 2014 Kia Sedona is tough to beat. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the base Sedona LX is $25,900 — about $1,000 less than the most affordable Toyota Sienna and nearly $3,000 less than the lowest-priced Odyssey.

What it means to you: Minivan shoppers are looking for practicality, safety and value. Now boasting a 5-star federal safety rating, the 2014 Kia Sedona makes a strong case in all three respects.
