Isuzu sold vehicles in the United States from 1981 until early 2009. The majority of these were sport utilities like the Trooper and Rodeo, but the company also offered a sedan; the Stylus, a two-door hatchback; the i-Mark, and a rear-wheel drive coupe, known as the Impulse.
The Isuzu Impulse was sold over two generations. The first was offered in the US from 1983 to 1990, while the second was sold from just 1990 to 1992. Both were sporty, compact three-door coupes with rear liftback designs. For the first two years of Impulse production, only a basic naturally-aspirated engine was available. It made just 90 horsepower and 108 lb-ft of torque. For 1985 though, a turbocharged four-cylinder was added to the lineup, rated at 140 hp and 166 lb-ft. For these first few years, powertrain was really the only variable when it came to the Impulse here in the US; the car was marketed as offering “everything standard”, meaning that there were no options; every one came more or less ‘loaded’ in either the non-turbo or Turbo trim. A performance-oriented RS model was offered for 1987, and paired a 148 horsepower turbocharged motor with a stiff, performance-tuned suspension.
This Isuzu Impulse Turbo hails from the 1988 model year and comes with just 88,458 miles on the odometer. It has a blue exterior and a blue interior, and (perhaps unfortunately) comes with an automatic transmission sending power to the rear wheels. Though the listing calls it a three-speed, this is more than likely a four-speed in reality. Beyond that, this 1988 Isuzu Impulse Turbo looks to come with some aftermarket wheels in a staggered configuration; smaller diameter with meaty tire sidewalls up front, and larger diameter with lower-profile tires in the rear. Overall, this 1980s Japanese relic looks to be in great shape, and would certainly turn heads at any 1980s and 90s themed car show.
