With fuel economy as one of 13 scored criteria, the AAA Green Car Guide is an annual report produced by the Automobile Club of Southern California that considers much more than fuel economy and emissions levels in judging models. AAA arrived at its ratings by assigning a score of 1 to 10 to mileage and emissions, as well as handling, crash worthiness, braking, comfort, acceleration, interior noise and more.
AAA basically divided all vehicles into six segments. Ultimately, fuel-efficient, low-emitting models dominated the top green vehicles in all but one segment, in which there are currently no electric or hybrid entries: Pickup trucks.
Here are the 2017 AAA Top Green Vehicle Awards in the guide’s six categories:
- Subcompact: Chevrolet Bolt EV Premier
- Compact: Volkswagen e-Golf SE
- Midsize: Lexus GS 450h F Sport
- Large: Tesla Model S 60
- SUV: Tesla Model X 75D
- Pickup trucks: Ford F-150 XLT SuperCrew.
