The Lexus CT200h and HS250h Are Good Used Car Buys

If you’re considering a Toyota Prius, but you want something a little different — or a little more luxurious — you may want to check out the Lexus CT 200h and HS 250h. The CT and HS, as they’re called, were hybrid Lexus models made over the last few years, and they’re surprisingly good bargains on the used market today.

First, a general overview. The HS 250h was a compact sedan, and it used a 187-horsepower 2.4-liter hybrid 4-cylinder. It returned 35 miles per gallon in the city and 34 mpg on the highway, which isn’t as good as a Prius — but it was more luxurious, with more equipment and technology. It also offered more power, as 187 horses is a strong figure, even compared to a brand-new Prius (at 121 hp). The HS was sold from 2010 to 2012.

The CT 200h, meanwhile, was a hatchback model, and it was sold from 2011 to 2016. Performance was dulled, thanks to a 98-hp hybrid 4-cylinder, but fuel economy was up to 43 mpg city/40 mpg hwy. The CT added extra practicality over the HS thanks to its hatchback body style, though it still didn’t reach the Prius in terms of gas mileage.

Although the CT and HS were both pricey cars back when they were new, used prices are far more forgiving. Right now, there are more than 260 different CT 200h models currently listed for sale on Autotrader for under $15,000, giving you near-Prius fuel economy and Lexus luxury for budget pricing. Meanwhile, basically every HS 250h listed for sale is under $20,000, and many are approaching $10,000, which is an excellent figure — again for strong gas mileage and Lexus luxury.

Admittedly, "strong gas mileage" isn’t quite the same for these cars as it is for the Toyota Prius, which is now rated at 58 mpg city/50 mpg hwy — but considering that a Prius starts from around $25,000 and goes from there, these are good, fuel efficient bargains with a little extra luxury thrown in.
