Surf-Inspired FIAT 500L Concept Debuts at California Surfing Competition

  • FIAT 500L customized with details from Vans shoes
  • Rooftop racks for boards and gear
  • Revealed at Vans US Open of Surfing

Celebrating the Vans US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, California, the FIAT 500L-Vans concept is a modern take on the classic surf wagon. The one-off concept, based on the 5-door 500L, draws design details from Vans shoes, a favorite brand in the board-sports community. Interior and exterior modifications give the 500L-Vans concept a rugged, sporty and beach-ready look inside and out.

With a long roof and, for its size, ample space for people or cargo, the 500L makes an ideal surf-wagon platform. The 500L-Vans concept is fitted with rooftop racks to carry surfboards and gear. The concept sits on 18-inch matte black wheels and includes unique cladding and a front fascia that incorporates the waffle-sole design from Vans shoes. The 2-tone paint scheme evokes a classic look, while the checkerboard roof resembles a popular Vans fabric pattern.

Inside, the concept features more Vans details. The dashboard trim resembles a collage of Vans stickers. Seat upholstery is canvas with a palm pattern, and the Vans waffle-sole material is repeated on the pedals and in storage bins.

While the FIAT 500L-Vans concept is a one-off model not intended for sale, it does highlight the attributes that make the production 500L an ideal vehicle for adventure. Practicality and efficiency are musts for drivers that use their vehicles to reach their favorite outdoor spots. The FIAT 500L strikes a good balance of the two, with 5-passenger space and 33 miles per gallon highway fuel economy. It’s affordable, too, with a starting price of $19,100.

What it means to you: Be inspired by the FIAT 500L-Vans concept, and consider the practical and affordable compact vehicle for your next adventure.
