Remember the Lamborghini Reventon? When it came out, it was the most expensive Lamborghini ever built at a cost of $1.6 million. On the outside, the special-edition Lamborghini featured a full carbon-fiber body that was claimed to be all-new and inspired by the F-22 Raptor -- right down to the finish, which was supposed to look like the Raptor's radar-avoiding stealth paint. Inside, the Reventon's dash included three LCD screens that looked like the multifunction displays in the F-22 Raptor's cockpit.

At the time, car enthusiasts thought it was the craziest thing they'd ever seen. I, too, remember thinking the Reventon was a spectacular supercar of the highest order -- until I came across this one for sale on Autotrader.

Apparently I was wearing rose-tinted glasses, because the Reventon has not aged well at all.

Looking back, the Reventon is clearly just a restyled Murcielago LP-640. The two cars are almost exactly the same mechanically, with the same engine, transmission, suspension and chassis. The interior is also clearly derived from the Murcielago, save for the LCD displays, a bit of carbon fiber and the word "Reventon" stitched into the door panels. Even Autotrader lists the Reventon as a trim-level of the Murcielago.

Would you look at this interior today and think it's worthy of a car that sold for $1.6 million?

I think the primary reason the Reventon hasn't aged well is that Lamborghini managed to make the Aventador do everything the Reventon did and more. The Aventador is faster, it looks more exotic, and it even has a better interior -- also inspired by aircraft. Exotic-car design has moved on in the last few years, and the bar has been raised considerably.

The car's current value reflects those raised standards. Even though there are only 20 Reventons in the entire world -- which you'd expect to guarantee its collectibility -- the one you see on Autotrader is listed for about $300,000 less than the original cost, and another recently went across the auction block for $1,375,000. In a world where people can buy a new $1.4-million LaFerrari and immediately flip it for $5 million, the ultra-rare Reventon has managed to lose money. Those poor Reventon owners probably never saw it coming.
