In honor of a special Subaru post I have coming later today, I’m going to take the time right now to show you the coolest Subaru WRX and STI models currently listed for sale on Autotrader. I still remember when the WRX came out for the 2002 model year, and I thought it was the coolest car in the world — and now, 16 years later, it still has a devoted following. If you’re part of that following (or if you want to join), here are five especially cool WRX or STI models.
This WRX is on this list because it’s the original, the first, the origin of the species here in the United States. It’s a 2002 model from the first year, with the desirable 5-speed manual transmission — and it’s a 1-owner car that’s never been modified or upgraded in any way. It’s offered by Wares Auto Sales in Traverse City, Michigan, with just 57,000 miles and a list price of $12,995.
One of my favorite WRX models on Autotrader is this bright green WRX race car, which is listed for sale at Evergreen Subaru in Auburn, Maine. This WRX is a fully built race car with racing seats and a roll cage, and, hilariously, Evergreen Subaru has added decals to the side that call it a "Courtesy Shuttle." Although this WRX is listed for sale, no price is attached — but we think it’d be a great race car, whether on pavement or rallying.
This 2004 WRX STI is a pristine example, finished in black with a blue interior, that’s traveled just 42,500 miles since new. The owner says it’s a 2-owner car, and that it’s completely stock — an impressive example of the STI from its very first year in the United States. It’s also impressive how well this car has held its value, as the original asking price was around $30,000 about 15 years ago — and now it’s listed with a private seller in Davison, Michigan, near Flint, for $20,750.
For many people, owning an STI is all about modifying it and extracting more horsepower — and this appears to be the most powerful STI currently listed for sale on Autotrader. The seller says it has 770 wheel horsepower, which is around 900 horses at the crank, where automotive horsepower is typically measured for new vehicles. That likely makes this thing incredibly fast — and now it’s listed by a private seller in the Dallas suburbs for $39,750.
The new WRX STI Type RA is the ultimate Impreza, and it’s priced at a whopping $50,000. While some Type RA models are listed with a dealership markup that goes over the factory MSRP, this one can be had at World Subaru in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, on the New Jersey Shore, for the sticker price. It’s also (in my opinion) the most desirable color: classic Subaru blue with gold wheels.
