The Ram HD pickup truck is all-new for 2019.
This rugged work truck has a newly available High Output Cummins turbodiesel engine that produces 400 horsepower and a whopping 1,000 lb-ft of torque.
New styling inside and out has a family resemblance to the recently updated Ram 1500 in a bigger, more heavy-duty package.
If bigger is better, then the all-new 2019 Ram HD pickup is fantastic. This heavy-duty truck has been fully redesigned with a new frame, a newly available engine, and an interior that can get extremely luxurious and high-tech. This is a welcome update as the previous model was starting to get a little long in the tooth.
Let’s take a closer look at the differences between the 2018 and 2019 Ram HD pickup.
The look of the previous generation of the Ram HD had been around for quite some time, but Ram did a nice job of keeping it looking fresh toward the end of its life. The higher trims got fancier grilles with big, bold "RAM" badging and the Power Wagon variant of the Ram 2500 has a distinct off-road character with the performance to back it up. The all-new 2019 model continues that trend of making each trim look a little different, making each one distinct. The big difference here is that the Ram HD now looks quite different from the Ram 1500 whereas the two trucks used to look pretty much the same. We think this is a step in the right direction, as it makes the HD variant of the Ram more of its own animal. The new model continues big-rig-inspired styling with a domed hood, a huge grille, and wide shoulders making for a truck that looks both rugged and classy. The interior of the new Ram HD resembles that of the new Ram 1500, which is a very good thing. It’s very luxurious for a great big work truck, especially in the higher trims. Even in the lower trims, it’s an interior that’s comfortable functional, and well built. The inside of the previous Ram HD wasn’t bad, but it’s also not nearly as nice as the inside of the new one.
A cool interior feature that is unique to the Ram HD that you won’t find on its rivals is the Mega Cab available on both the 2018 and 2019 models. This gives the back seat limousine like comfort with reclining, sliding and folding back seats with storage underneath. The Mega Cab option gives the Ram HD a unique advantage as a family vehicle on top of having great towing and hauling capabilities.
A couple of tweaked versions of engines in the 2018 Ram HD have been carried over to the 2019 model. However, the base 5.7-liter HEMI V8 has been dropped and a new high-output version of the Cummins turbodiesel has been added, which is only available in the Ram 3500. It’s also worth noting that the manual transmission has been dropped and the Ram HD is now automatic-only. As you’ve probably guessed, both models have standard rear-wheel drive and optional 4-wheel drive.
2018 Ram HD Engines
5.7-liter V8 (2500 only); 383 horsepower, 400 lb-ft of torque; Max towing: 13,890 pounds
6.4-liter V8; 410 hp, 429 lb-ft of torque; Max towing: 16,320 lbs (2500), 16,480 pounds (3500)
6.7-liter turbodiesel inline-six (2500); 370 hp, 800 lb-ft of torque; Max towing: 17,980 pounds
6.7-liter turbodiesel inline-six (3500); 385 hp, 930 lb-ft of torque; Max towing: 31,210 pounds
2019 Ram HD Engines
6.4-liter V8; 410 hp, 429 lb-ft of torque; Max towing: 17,130 pounds
6.7-liter turbo-diesel inline-six; 370 hp, 850 lb-ft of torque; Max towing: 21,560 pounds
6.7-liter high-output turbo-diesel inline-six (3500 only); 400 hp, 1,000 lb-ft of torque; Max towing: 35,100 pounds
The revamped engines in the all-new Ram are ready for work. As you can see by the numbers, capability has been cranked up a notch at every level. Whether you go with the gas-powered HEMI V8 or the incredibly capable Cummins turbodiesel, you’re getting a serious workhorse with the 2019 Ram HD.
Technology is another area where the 2018 model wasn’t bad, but the 2019 model is much better. Ram did a nice job keeping the tech in the previous Ram HD current with features like an 8.4-in infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. However, the 2018 model was lacking in available driver-assistance technology.
The new 2019 model has a cool towing technology package that includes cargo-view and surround-view cameras, trailer reverse guidance, trailer tow mirrors, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The 8.4-in infotainment system is still available, but if you go to the top of the Ram HD ladder to the Limited trim, you get a class-exclusive 12-in system in portrait mode kind of like in a Tesla. This huge screen packs in SiriusXM, HD Radio, navigation and so much more. A few other nice tech features in the new Ram include five Type C USB ports, up to three 110-volt outlets, and optional wireless charging.
The many updates to the new Ram HD bring along with them a modest price hike. The 2018 Ram 2500 has a starting MSRP of $33,045 and the 2019 2500 model starts at $33,645. The 3500 model starts at $34,445 for the 2018 model and $35,095 for 2019. The higher-end models of the 2018 truck get right around the $60k mark, while the fancy top trims of the new 2019 models get well into the high $60k range.
The bigger, badder, better 2019 Ram HD is a big improvement on an already-good heavy-duty pickup truck. With its outstanding capability, luxurious interior, rugged aesthetic and unique options like the Mega Cab, this Ram just might be the new king of heavy-duty pickups, which is saying a lot when you consider the tough competition.
