The just announced 2020 Kia Stinger GTS is a stab at improving near perfection. In its AWD GT form, the Stinger is arguably one of the best sport sedans on the road. And that’s before factoring in its surprisingly reasonable price. Kia always has a value story to tell, and the Stinger’s bang-to-buck ratio screams bargain. It’s not just about performance, however. It’s a comfortable sedan fully capable of transporting four adults and their luggage on an overland adventure. In other words, the Stinger does it all. And now, a limited-edition Stinger GTS (introduced at the New York Auto Show) delivers even more performance.
Kia dubs the all-wheel-drive system found in the 2020 Kia GTS, D-AWD. It’s a push forward to close the gap between the performance of the Stinger AWD GT and its rear-wheel-drive GT stablemate. It includes a limited-slip differential engineered to enhance traction and evenly distribute torque between the rear wheels when slip is detected. The emphasis on RWD dynamics is furthered by the Drive Mode Select. Choosing Comfort sends 60% of power to the rear wheels. Switching to Sport mode ups the power sent rearward to 80% for more spirited driving. But wait, there’s more. Drift mode sends 100% of power to the rear wheels while holding gears without upshifting.
Hold the Line
The Stinger GTS retains the Stinger GT powertrain, including its 365-horsepower 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 that also makes 376 lb-ft of torque. All of this chaos is channeled to the wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Dressing It Up
Several appearance features will separate the Stinger GTS from its Stinger and Stinger GT siblings. First is its unique “Federation” orange exterior paint. Accenting the exterior color will be genuine carbon fiber bits outlining the tiger nose grille, outboard-mirror caps and side vents. As for exterior badging, the rear Kia logo will be replaced with a Stinger emblem along with a GTS badge.
Upgrades inside include suede-like Alcantara covering the steering wheel and a center console with a similar material being used in the headliner.
A sunroof, a 720-watt Harman Kardon audio system and wireless smartphone charger round out the Stinger GTS interior enhancements.
