It’s been a minute since I slid into a brand-new Sentra. I’ve always thought they were comfortable and stylish enough for what they are, a compact sedan. And my opinion hasn’t really changed after this most recent experience. The model Nissan provided for testing was a 2024 Sentra SV, firmly in the middle of the car’s trim ladder between the S and the SR. This was a preproduction model, so there may be slight changes when it hits showroom floors, but I wouldn’t expect any noticeable differences. Nissan lists the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) for the 2024 Sentra SV at $22,960, including the $1,140 factory-to-dealer destination charge. Extra goodies on the car, like Scarlet Ember Tintcoat premium paint, Premium and All-Weather packages, and a set of carpeted floor mats, bring the sticker price to $26,745 (including destination). Here’s what I took away after my time with the 2024 Nissan Sentra.

<h4>1. Less Than Fob-ulous</h4>

The key fob was the most aggravating feature I’ve experienced on a test drive. I picked the car up at night with the keys already inside. Upon stopping at the store on my way home, I had to hold the fob up to the headlamp to figure out which button locked the car. There were no discernable colors or textures on the fob to distinguish the functions. It was double the fun returning to the car and trying to unlock it in near-total darkness. It got a little easier to operate with more experience and improved light conditions, but I would never say I enjoyed using the fob. On the flip side, there’s a nice little cubby in the center console behind the shifter that is exactly the right size to hold the fob if you’re like me and are accustomed to entering cars with keys in hand rather than in your pocket. I didn’t ever get the hang of the Nissan Intelligent Key (the fob’s official name) functions where “Pressing the Request Switch transmits a signal from the car antenna, and the key that receives the signal then automatically returns a signal. The car tuner receives this signal and then locks or unlocks the vehicle,” according to the Nissan website. This might be one of those cases where a good salesperson could have trained me during delivery, and I wouldn’t have been left to fumble in the dark.

<h4>2. Premium Blend</h4>

The Premium Package is the way to go, at least in the SV. It makes the interior a real standout. You swap out the charcoal cloth seats for tan quilted leather, and so you get this rich-looking mix of mostly soft-touch charcoal and tan materials that punches way above its weight class. Even the obviously faux carbon-fiber trim is aesthetically pleasing. Other highlights in the package that dress up the Sentra include 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, a power-sliding glass moonroof, a 6-way power adjustable driver’s seat with 2-way power lumbar, and a Bose Premium Audio System with eight speakers. The $2,520 Premium Package comes cuffed with the $590 All-Weather Package, which adds heated outside mirrors, front seats, and leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, and remote start. Altogether, that’s a lot of value for $3,110.

<h4>3. Backfill</h4>

The trunk looks massive for such a small car. Nissan claims the Senta has 14.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity in the trunk. Eyeballing it, I could probably pile a few golf bags or something of similar length in there, even without folding down the rear seat. The point is, whatever your passion, the Sentra probably has the room to accommodate it.

<h4>4. Hold the Line</h4>

One thing I appreciated about the Sentra’s lane-departure warning is that it was neither overbearing nor pointlessly belated. Maybe it was on some kind of Goldilocks setting. A few years ago, I rented a Nissan Altima for a road trip, and the whole time, I felt like my steering was being micromanaged by all the bells and haptic buzzes. This car was attuned to what I was doing and let me drive but would let me know if I started to drift.

<h4>5. Lost in Transmission</h4>

Auto journalists love to complain about a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), so here’s my time to shine. It wasn’t that bad. It did have the trademark whine or drone, particularly around town. At times, the Sentra felt like it was in the rev range it would be if I was late shifting from second to third on a manual 6-speed transmission. I didn’t really notice any droning suring highway travel. I’m sure I would get used to the CVT’s behavior with repeated use, but the first time it caught my attention, I had a slight moment of panic, thinking I was in the wrong gear until I remembered it was the CVT doing its thing. On the other hand, the needle on the fuel gauge barely budged during my time with the Sentra.

<h4>The Wrap</h4>

The 2024 Nissan Sentra SV is a lot of car for the money, especially if you have room in your wallet for some extras. It has very pleasant manners and is stylish inside and out. I have very little to gripe about — other than that infernal fob.
