Lancer Evolution

TThe Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution first went on sale in 2003 in the United States and was only available in one configuration. This trim level was simply known as the Lancer Evolution or the GSR, in other markets. Mitsubishi added two more trim levels to the Lancer Evolution lineup the following year, which slotted above and below the GSR (<a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution/rs">RS</a>, GSR, <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution/mr">MR</a>). While the GSR might be as hardcore as the race-ready RS model or as luxurious as the MR with its leather-wrapped Recar seats, it’s the most well-rounded and the best choice for a car enthusiast looking to build a modified streetcar.


Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X GSR (10th Generation 2008 - 2015)

Key Improvements: The Lancer Evolution X is the final and longest-running generation of the famed rally car. The tenth-generation Evo features significant styling and performance changes from the previous generations. The chassis received a major overhaul, which improved structural rigidity and safety. The <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution?startYear=2015&amp;endYear=2008">Evo X</a> utilizes Mitsubishi’s RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) unibody design with high-tensile steel. To help take full advantage of the improved handling, Mitsubishi unveiled a new, more powerful engine known as the 4B11T. The final and most powerful version of the Lancer Evolution GSR makes 291 horsepower and 300 lb-ft torque. 

Model Updates: The tenth-generation model had minor styling changes, but this certainly shouldn’t be a deal breaker when considering which model year to buy. One thing to consider is that the 2011 and newer models have a revised timing chain that is less prone to stretching. Earlier models can have the timing chain replaced with the newer version to help prevent issues, but this should be factored in when comparing prices.


Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX GSR (9th Generation 2006)

Key Improvements: The <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/2006/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution">Evo IX</a> builds upon the previous generation and features minor performance and cosmetic changes to gain incremental improvements. Besides the revised interior and exterior styling, the biggest change is the introduction of MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing and Electronic Control). The more advanced version of the 4G63T produces 286 horsepower and 289 lb-ft torque, bringing the horsepower per liter to an impressive 143 horsepower. Drivers looking for the ultimate Evo GSR should consider the ninth-generation because it’s the last version to feature the iron block engine capable of making high horsepower on the stock internals.

Model Updates: The Evo IX had only a one-year production run, so no updates were made to the ninth-generation Lancer Evolution.


Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII GSR (8th Generation 2003 – 2005)

Under the Hood of the <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/mitsubishi/lancer-evolution?startYear=2003&amp;endYear=2005">Evo VIII</a> GSR is the tried-and-true 4G63T turbocharged inline-four-cylinder engine, which also powers early-generation <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/mitsubishi/eclipse">Eclipse</a> models. The nearly 300 horsepower and AWD combination allows the Evo GSR to sprint from 0 to 60 in 5 seconds and complete the quarter mile in 13.4 seconds. The advanced AWD system makes the Lancer Evolution a strong performer on and off the pavement. The Evo has a long history of being a world-class rally car and won four consecutive World Driver’s Champion titles from 1996 to 1999.

Model Updates: The Evo VIII's final year of production was 2005, bringing some notable upgrades to the GSR. Power output increased by 5 horsepower (271 HP – 276 HP) and torque by 13 (273 LB-FT – 286 LB-FT), and turbocharger revisions broadened the powerband to improve torque at lower RPMs. In addition to more power, the 2005 Evo GSR benefits from a new limited-slip front and active center differential, greatly improving handling. The center differential allows drivers to select from three drive modes (tarmac, gravel, snow) to optimize performance for the road surface. 


Used Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution GSR Prices

If you’re shopping for a Lancer Evo on a budget, there is a good chance it will be the GSR trim. The base model was sold as the Evo during the early generations in the United States and is known in other markets as the GSR. Expect to pay roughly $35,000 for a well-kept example of the Evo GSR.
