Among all the news accompanying the totally redesigned Jeep Grand Cherokee is the introduction of the first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version. It’s the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe.
This 2-row SUV shares the gasoline version’s new exterior styling, fresh cabin design, and updated architecture. We discuss the redesigned gasoline version and long-wheelbase three-row Grand Cherokee L elsewhere.
You might think an electrified version of the Grand Cherokee might not live up to its gasoline-only sibling’s off-road prowess. However, that’s not the case.
Jeep offers the Grand Cherokee PHEV only with 4-wheel drive (4WD). It uses the same two 4WD systems found in the upper grades of the gasoline-only version.
Every bit as rugged and capable as the gas-only Trailhawk, the Trailhawk 4xe ran the legendary Rubicon Trail with electric-only propulsion.
Moreover, it has the same equipment as the traditional Trailhawk. For example, it sports the Jeep Quadra-Lift air suspension with semi-active damping. It provides 11.3 inches of ground clearance and 24 inches of water fording.
Also standard for Trailhawk 4xe is the new front sway-bar disconnect that translates into enhanced articulation and traction over extreme terrain.
Now that we’ve established the 4xe’s trail creds, let’s get down to some of the details.
Jeep separates the Grand Cherokee 4xe into four trim levels: Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, and Summit.
There is also a major option package for Summit that Jeep calls Summit Reserve. Jeep’s marketing folks are breaking that out as a fifth trim level. However, we will treat it here like the option package it is.

Power & Fuel Economy
Comprising the PHEV propulsion system is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, two electric motors, and a 400-volt battery pack. This system generates a combined 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque.
An 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters divvies up the torque to all four wheels.
On battery power alone, the Grand Cherokee 4xe will travel up to 25 miles. The EPA gives this plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Grand Cherokee a combined fuel-economy rating of 57 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent).
The total range on a full tank of gas and a fully charged battery is 470 miles.
We think we’d be happy with the Limited. Jeep stocks it with most of the popular convenience, infotainment, and driver-aid technology. The Luxury Tech Group II package seems like a pretty good deal to us, as well.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4xe (starting at $55,865)
Limited 4xe uses the Quadra-Trac II active 4WD with its 2-speed transfer case. It also gets the Selec-Terrain traction management system with five modes.
Standard equipment includes 18-inch aluminum wheels and LED exterior lights (auto on-off headlights, taillights, and daytime running lights).
Also standard are dual-zone automatic climate control, a 10.25 digital gauge cluster, cloth seats, six USB ports, and two 12-volt power ports. Keyless entry with push-button start, 8-way power-adjustable front seats, and hill-start assist are also included.
Other features are heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a power liftgate, remote start, high-beam assist, and satellite-radio capability.
LED fog lights, heated second-row seats, leather seating, Homelink transceiver, and heated outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals are also included.
The Uconnect 5 media interface, an 8.4-inch touchscreen, and a 9-speaker Alpine audio system are within the infotainment system. Wireless Android Auto, wireless Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, HD Radio, voice text reply, and Alexa are also standard.
The driver aids are forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Also included are rear park-assist with automatic braking and adaptive cruise control.
You may opt for the Luxury Tech Group II ($1,900 estimated). It adds an integrated off-road camera, Intersection Collision-Assist, front-rear park assist with stop, a power-adjustable steering wheel, rain-sensing wipers, and much more.
Adding the $1,795 destination fee to the Limited 4xe base price brings the total to $57,660. If you put no money down and financed for 60 months at 3% interest, the monthly payment would be about $1,036. See 2022 Grand Cherokee Limited 4xe models for sale
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4xe includes:
Select-Terrain – A traction-management system, it provides settings for five terrain scenarios: Snow, Sand, Mud, Rock, and Auto.
Keyless entry – If the key fob is on your person, the doors automatically unlock when you approach the vehicle. Push-button start is paired with keyless entry.
High-beam assist – If your vehicle has this system, the high beams are always on. When photosensors or a forward pointed camera detects oncoming headlights or taillights, the system automatically switches off the high beams. Then automatically switches them back on when no other vehicle lights are detected.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe (starting at $62,485)
Trailhawk is Grand Cherokee’s most off-road capable trim. This holds for the Trailhawk 4xe, too. It is standard with the Quadra-Drive II 4WD system. It also comes with an electronic rear limited-slip differential and Select-Speed Control.
Also standard is the Quadra-Lift air suspension system with semi-active damping and front sway bar disconnect.
Trailhawk also adds front tow hooks, an integrated off-road camera, a gloss-black roof, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and suede seat inserts.
Power-folding outboard mirrors and ventilated front seats are also included.
Ante up another $1,295 for the Luxury Tech Group III package. It adds a hands-free power liftgate, power-adjustable steering wheel with memory, rain-sensing wipers, wireless phone charging, and more.
Adding the $1,795 destination fee to the Trailhawk 4xe base price totals $62,480. Financing with no money down for 60 months at 3% interest works out to about $1,155 per month. See 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe models for sale
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe includes:
Select-Speed Control – A set-it-and-forget-it system, it maintains a preset speed when off-roading up and down hills.
Electronic limited-slip rear differential – Sensors monitoring the drive wheels on the same axle automatically send more torque to the wheel with grip when the other wheel is slipping.
Auto-dimming rearview mirror – Using photosensors, it recognizes bright headlights closing from behind. It then automatically dims the reflection of those lights.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 4xe (starting at $65,760)
Stepping up to Overland loses several of the Trailhawk’s off-roading technologies, like the electronic rear limited-slip differential and Selec-Speed Control.
Overland also loses the Quadra-Drive II for the Quadra-Trac II 4WD system in the Limited.
Overland adds 20-inch aluminum wheels, a hands-free power liftgate, upgraded LED exterior lights, and power-folding outboard mirrors with puddle lights.
It also features a power panoramic sunroof, Nappa leather seats, rain-sensing wipers, and a power-adjustable steering wheel.
Another $1,995 gets you the Advanced ProTech Group III. It adds a head-up display, Highway Assist semi-autonomous driving system, surround-view camera, and the Intersection Collision-Assist system.
Adding the $1,795 destination fee to the Overland 4xe base price equals $67,555. With no money down, financing for 60 months at 3% interest works out to about $1,214 per month. See 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 4xe models for sale

Panoramic sunroof – A dual-pane design, the front pane slides open with the press of a button.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit 4xe (starting at $69,820)
The Quadra-Drive II 4WD system replaces the Quadra-Trac II system.
Summit builds on Overland. In addition to getting the electronic rear limited-slip differential back, Summit adds quad-zone automatic climate control and Nappa leather seating with quilted bolsters.
Summit also adds front-seat extendable bottom cushions, 12-way power-adjustable front seats, massaging front seats, and the Active Driving Assist system.
An upgraded Uconnect 5 system with a 10.1-inch touchscreen and navigation, driver-attention warning, and Intersection Collision Assist are standard. Also included are ParkSense Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist and a surround-view camera.

Adding the $1,795 destination fee to the Summit 4xe base price brings the total to $71,615. Financing with no money down for 60 months at 3% interest works out to a monthly payment of about $1,287. See 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit 4xe models for sale
