2022 Mercedes-EQ EQS: Choosing the Right Trim

There is no bigger news on the Mercedes-Benz front than the introduction of the all-electric 2022 Mercedes-EQ EQS.

A bit smaller than the S-Class, the EQS rests on a new platform specifically tailored for electric vehicle (EV) models.

Mercedes offers it as the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) EQS 450+ and as the all-wheel drive (AWD) EQS 580 4Matic. 4Matic is AWD in Mercedes lingo.

A single 329-horsepower electric motor is astride the rear axle of the EQS 450+.  Delivering a combined 516 hp, two electric motors (one on each axle) motivates the EQS 580.

Each EQS version uses a 400-volt lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 107.8 kWh. This is good for up to 350 miles of range for EQS 450+ and 340 miles for the EQS 580.

According to the Mercedes stopwatch, reaching 60 miles per hour from a standstill requires just 5.5 seconds for the EQS 450+. The EQS 580 only needs 4.1 seconds.

Mercedes separates the EQ EQS into three grades: Premium, Exclusive, and Pinnacle. Each is available with either powertrain.

Not to be left out, AMG is producing its own EQS. It’s the Mercedes-AMG EQS, launching later in the model year after the EQ EQS models go on sale.

Every EQS features the Mercedes “Hey Mercedes” artificial intelligence (AI) MBUX interface. It controls most of the vehicle’s systems, learning driver preferences and behaviors as it goes.

Mercedes tells us there are at least 350 sensors scattered about the EQS performing assorted tasks.
