2023 BMW X5: Choosing the Right Trim

BMW has spruced up both the exterior and cabin of the 2023 BMW X5. The Bavarian carmaker hasn’t released details of the updates. However, spy photos indicate a freshened grille, headlights, bumpers, and new taillights. Note: The photos displayed in this Autotrader Trim Review show the 2022 BMW X5.

Inside, we fully expect the 2023 BMW X5 to follow other updated models and sport the BMW Curved Display. This 20-plus-inch display consists of two screens: one is a digital gauge cluster and the other a vast infotainment touchscreen. The brain tasked with running all of this is BMW’s iDrive 8 operating system.

A three-powertrain lineup still propels the five X5 models, divvied up according to trim level. In lockstep with the X3 for 2023, the X5 sDrive40i and xDrive40i get a turbocharged inline-6-cylinder mild-hybrid (MHEV) powertrain.

A twin-turbo V8 supplies the thrust for the M50i. The track-ready BMW X5 M uses the twin-turbo V8, but it’s re-tuned for more horsepower. The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) xDrive45e marries a turbocharged inline-6 engine with an 83kW electric motor.

An 8-speed automatic transmission transfers power to the wheels. All grades, save the sDrive40i, provide standard all-wheel drive (AWD). The sDrive40i is rear-wheel drive (RWD) only.

Launching BMW into the SUV (or “sports activity vehicle” in BMW-speak) arena in 1999, the X5 continues to set the pace for midsize luxury crossovers. Lining up against competitors like the Audi Q7, Lexus RX, and Acura MDX, the South Carolina-built X5 pulls together performance, comfort, and technology into one overachieving package.

At the heart of the sDrive40i and xDrive40i is a new MHEV system with a 335-horsepower 3.0-liter inline-6 engine married to a 48-volt starter/generator. The electric element allows for short bursts of extra horsepower when accelerating. There are no government mileage estimates yet.

You can easily tailor the driving experience to your preference with selectable modes like Comfort, Eco Pro, and Sport.

The roundup of infotainment features kicks off with the BMW Curved Display and its expansive touchscreen. A 10-speaker audio system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and satellite-radio capability are also standard.

Providing an enhanced display of systems and controls, Live Cockpit Pro, along with navigation, is also included.

Active Driving Assistant is a bundle of safety and driver aid technologies. Among them are a forward-collision warning with low-speed automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-departure warning. Front-rear park assist and rear cross-traffic alert are also included.

You may pump up the features with any one of several options. For example, the Driving Assistance Professional Package ($1,700) gains you extended traffic-jam assist and adaptive cruise control.
