The 2023 Subaru Outback rolls into showrooms with a new but recognizable face and more advanced cameras for its EyeSight Driver Assist technologies. Only the Wilderness grade’s front end remains unchanged.
A wagon excelling in a world of SUVs is a rare bird indeed. But then, so is a wagon with 8.7 inches of ground clearance (or 9.5 inches for the Wilderness).
All-wheel drive (AWD) with X-Mode featuring hill-descent control and torque vectoring is standard for each of Outback’s nine trim levels. They include base Outback, Premium, Onyx Edition, Limited, Touring, Onyx Edition XT, Wilderness, Limited XT, and Touring XT.
Standard in all but the Wilderness and XT versions is a 182-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. In combined city and highway driving, the government estimates 29 mpg.
Those with an “XT” tacked on to the end of their name get a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine standard. The Wilderness trim gets the turbo as well. A continuously variable automatic transmission with an 8-speed manual shift mode transfers both engines’ production to the wheels.
We like the Outback for its wagon configuration, standard AWD, solid fuel economy, advanced driver aids, and outdoor spirit.
