The newest electric sedan in BMW’s growing portfolio of EVs is the i5. The all-new 2024 BMW i5 is the electric version of the 5 Series. It has much in common with the redesigned 5 Series, like its attractive design and luxurious, high-tech interior, but it doesn’t burn a drop of gas. Two powertrains are available, and various options let you customize your electric luxury sedan to your liking. An impressive range of up to 295 miles makes the 2024 BMW i5 a usable EV for daily driving duties.
The chief rival of the BMW i5 is the Mercedes-EQ EQE Sedan, and that’s arguably its only direct competitor. More affordable options include the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2, and if you have more room in your budget, you could upgrade to the Tesla Model S, Porsche Taycan, or Lucid Air.
What’s New:
The BMW i5 is an all-new model for 2024. It’s the all-electric version of the BMW 5 Series.
Our Recommendation:
The BMW i5 M60 is the only option if you want or need all-wheel drive. However, we prefer the more affordable, longer-range eDrive40 model. Its performance is more than adequate, and it’s well equipped with standard features like a power moonroof, the BMW Curved Display, and Active Driving Assistant. Additionally, we recommend adding the Driving Assistance Professional Package for the extra safety tech.

2024 BMW i5 eDrive40: $66,800
The i5 eDrive40 uses a single-motor electric powertrain with rear-wheel drive. It produces 335 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, suitable for a 0-60 mph time of 5.7 seconds. According to the EPA, this i5 gets 295 miles of range on a full charge, but only with 19-inch wheels. The bigger the wheels, the worse the range. The vehicle can charge from 10% to 80% in 30 minutes when using a public DC fast charging station.
Standard features in the i5 eDrive40 include Satin aluminum line exterior trim, power-folding, heated mirrors, a power moonroof, perforated Veganza (faux leather) upholstery, dark oak interior trim, an Anthracite headliner, automatic climate control, a wireless charging pad, and Iconic Sounds Electric, which makes sounds that correspond with acceleration.
Also standard is the BMW Curved Display, which houses a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment screen. Other tech features include navigation with over-the-air updates, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a Harman Kardon 12-speaker premium audio system.
Safety features include front and rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and Active Driving Assistant, which bundles frontal collision warning, active blind-spot detection, and lane-departure warning.
Many option packages and individual options are available for the 2024 BMW i5. One of our favorites is the Driving Assistance Professional Package ($2,500). It expands the driver assistance tech features with full-speed adaptive cruise control, active lane-keeping assistant with side-collision avoidance, active lane changing, evasion assistant, and hands-free highway driving where applicable.
The M Sport Package ($3,000) is primarily an appearance package that makes the eDrive40 look like the sportier M60 model, but it also comes with real performance upgrades like M Sport brakes with blue calipers and M sport suspension. The M Sport Professional Package further adds extended Shadowline trim, an Iconic Glow kidney grille, M Shadowline lights, and a rear spoiler for an extra $1,050.
The Convenience ($550), Premium ($2,850), and Executive ($4,250) packages let you choose your level of luxury. The Convenience Package only adds heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. The Premium Package adds a head-up display, Parking Assistant Plus, an interior camera, full LED headlights with cornering lights, Natural Interaction voice and gesture control, and full-speed adaptive cruise control. The Executive Package adds the above, plus the Sky Lounge panoramic roof, rear sunshades, and glass controls.
Finally, a Luxury Seating Package ($1,350) does what its name implies by adding multicontour front seats, heated and cooled front seats, and heated rear seats.
Several features included in the option packages are available as individual options, notably the Sky Lounge roof ($600), heated front and rear seats ($500), and the illuminated grille ($500). You can also add a Bowers & Wilkins audio system ($950), an Extended Merino leather interior ($2,450), open-pore wood trim ($600), various premium paint options ($650-$3,600), a few 20-inch wheel options ($800), and 21-inch wheels ($1,800).
With the $995 destination fee, the 2024 BMW i5 eDrive40 costs $67,795. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment comes to $1,279. See 2024 BMW i5 eDrive40 for sale near you
