Last year, for the 2023 model year, the Kia Sportage made a big splash as a larger and more stylish 5-seat compact SUV that competed with the likes of the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, and Subaru Forester.
For 2024, Kia hasn’t messed with success; the 2024 Kia Sportage has been updated in only a few minor ways (see our “What’s New” section below).
As before, the only engine offered in the Kia Sportage continues to be a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder that mates to an 8-speed automatic transmission. With 187 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque, this powertrain does the job reasonably well while returning respectable EPA fuel economy figures.
According to the EPA, the front-wheel-drive (FWD) 2024 Kia Sportage is rated at 25 mpg city/33 mpg highway/28 mpg combined. With all-wheel-drive (AWD), that drops to 23 mpg city/26 mpg highway/25 mpg combined. The Sportage X-Pro model, set up to be better in the dirt, comes in at 23 mpg city/30 mpg highway/26 mpg combined.
The 2024 Kia Sportage is offered in the following trim levels: LX, EX, SX, SX-Prestige, X-Line, X-Pro, and X-Pro Prestige. The LX, EX, SX, and SX-Prestige are front-wheel-drive models. All-wheel-drive (AWD) is available on each of those trim configurations (minus the SX) for a reasonable $1,800. The X-Line, X-Pro, and X-Pro Prestige come standard with AWD.

What’s New:
Seat-mounted, side-impact rear airbags are now standard on all 2024 Kia Sportage models. LED headlights have also been made standard across the lineup.
A heated steering wheel is no longer offered on the Sportage EX AWD model; the heated windshield available on the SX-Prestige AWD model has been dropped.
Our Recommendation:
The Kia Sportage in EX FWD trim is a bargain. It’s only $2,000 more than the LX. Still, it comes with good-quality synthetic leather upholstery, a push-button starter, a big navigation screen, a wireless smartphone charger, and blind-spot monitoring. The last feature is complemented by rear cross-traffic alert, one of our favorite safety technologies.

2024 Kia Sportage LX: $27,090
The entry-level Sportage LX impresses us with numerous standard driver-assist systems, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-follow assist, and a driver attention monitor. Rear parking sensors, a rearview monitor, and automatic high-beam headlights are standard also.
The LX may be the base trim, but thanks to features such as 17-inch alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, and LED headlights and taillights, it certainly doesn’t look the part.
Also standard are cloth-upholstered seats with a 6-way manual driver’s seat and 60/40-split folding rear seat with recline. Particularly welcome (and a bit surprising) in a base model is the 12.2-inch digital instrument cluster, along with second-row air vents, cruise control, and remote keyless entry.
A 6-speaker stereo is teamed with an 8-inch touchscreen that hosts Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM, and an integrated Wi-Fi hot spot. A single USB-C charge port is found in the front console. An intuitive touchpad just below the infotainment screen features physical knobs. The knobs can control audio or climate settings depending on the selected system.
Adding all-wheel drive ($1,800) to the LX brings heated side mirrors, heated front seats, and a temporary compact spare tire.

2024 Kia Sportage LX includes:
- 12.2-inch digital cluster – A fully digital gauge cluster is particularly welcome at this low price point. It’s configurable by the driver.
- Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – It’s convenient to have access to all your smartphone’s navigation, music, apps, and messages.
- Automatic high beams – The headlights switch to high beams in low-light conditions but automatically dim when traffic is sensed ahead.
2024 Kia Sportage EX: $29,090
Our favorite trim level, the Sportage EX, offers more creature comforts for not much more money. When it comes to your dollars, we think it’s a wise choice.
To the LX trim level, the EX adds 18-inch alloy wheels, a proximity key fob, a push-button starter, heated outside mirrors with integrated turn signals, a wireless charging pad, and additional USB-C ports front and back.
The seats are upholstered in a synthetic leather called SynTex. Both front seats are heated. The driver’s seat is a 10-way power-adjustable unit with 2-way power lumbar support. A leather-wrapped steering wheel completes the look.
Dual-zone automatic climate control comes standard on the Sportage EX, as does a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with built-in navigation.
The Sportage EX also has three other notable driver assists: a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic assist, and Safe Exit Warning, which prevents the rear doors from opening if a car is approaching dangerously from behind.
Available options include a locking differential for AWD models and a heated steering wheel.

2024 Kia Sportage EX includes:

- Wireless charging pad – It’s convenient to charge your smartphone without needing a cord or a USB port.
- Blind-spot monitor – This technology, which warns of vehicles in your rear 3-quarter blind spot, makes lane changes much safer.
2024 Kia Sportage SX: $32,590
The SX adds luxury touches to the Sportage EX while upping the price by $3,500.
Notable upgrades include a hands-free power liftgate, a panoramic sunroof, a flush-type roof rack, a curved 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and LED interior lighting. In addition to 2-position memory for the driver’s seat and mirrors, you get rain-sensing wipers and an 8-speaker Harman Kardon audio upgrade.
Additional driver-assist and safety features include adaptive smart cruise control (with stop and go, plus navigation assist) and a front intersection cross-traffic avoidance system. What’s more, Kia’s Highway Driving Assist will operate the throttle, brakes, and steering without driver input, but only on a limited network of approved roads.

2024 Kia Sportage SX includes:
- Highway Driving Assist – This feature autonomously drives the Sportage SX on the highway, controlling the gas, brakes, and steering. The driver must remain focused on the road ahead, or the system will shut off.
- Panoramic sunroof – The Kia Sportage cabin feels more open and airy with this standard feature.
- Smart power liftgate – The hatch opens automatically if it senses the key fob in the immediate vicinity for more than three seconds.
2024 Kia Sportage SX Prestige: $34,590
The SX Prestige builds off the SX, adding premium features like a heated steering wheel.
It also brings 19-inch alloy wheels, LED projector-style headlights, LED rear combination lights, LED fog lights, and an 8-way power-adjustable passenger seat. Premium SynTex upholstery comes standard, as do ventilated front seats.
Additional driver assists include reverse automatic emergency braking, front parking sensors, a surround-view monitor, and a blind-spot monitor that shows an image of vehicles in the adjacent lane.
Adding AWD brings a locking differential but no heated windshield this year.

2024 Kia Sportage X-Line AWD: $31,890
The X-Line comes standard with Kia’s Active All-Wheel Drive and 19-inch wheels, plus enhanced exterior trim and raised roof rack rails. While the X-Line gets most of the SX trim exterior features, it’s not equipped with a panoramic sunroof or power liftgate, which are included in the optional X-Line Premium Package upgrade.
The 2024 Kia Sportage X-Line AWD includes the standard 12.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a wireless charging pad, SynTex X-Line seating, and a 10-way power driver’s seat with 2-way lumbar support. Heated front seats are standard, as is the base model’s 6-speaker audio system. The X-Line also gets the better 12.3-inch touchscreen with built-in navigation.
Safety and driver-assist systems mirror those of the EX.

2024 Kia Sportage X-Pro: $36,090
The X-Pro is the Sportage best suited for reaching remote campsites at the end of a long, bumpy dirt road. As such, it competes with the Subaru Forester Wilderness and the Jeep Compass Trailhawk.
The Sportage X-Pro builds off the X-Line, adding BFGoodrich all-terrain tires, 17-inch matte-black wheels, heated windshield washer nozzles, and the following multi-terrain drive modes: Normal, Sport, Smart, and Snow.
LED taillights and fog lights are part of the X-Pro trim package, as are heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals. A panoramic sunroof, a hands-free power tailgate, and raised roof rails also come standard on the X-Pro.
Other standard features include driver’s seat memory, a Harman Kardon Premium audio system, a 12.3-inch infotainment system with navigation, a proximity key with push-button start, and adaptive smart cruise control that is linked to the navigation system and will slow the Sportage, if needed, for upcoming curves on the highway.

2024 Kia Sportage X-Pro includes:
- All-terrain tires – These aggressive BFGoodrich tires, with tall sidewalls, look great on the X-Pro’s matte-black 17-inch wheels.
- Heated windshield – In cold climates, this will prevent ice from building up on the wiper blades. The washer nozzles are heated, too.

The X-Pro Prestige starts as the X-Pro trim, then gets the same features as the SX Prestige trim, including its driver-assist systems, panoramic glass sunroof, heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, and LED projector headlights.
