2024 Tesla Model X: Choosing the Right Trim

Never to be mistaken for anything else on the road, the 2024 Tesla Model X returns unchanged. Along with its electric powertrain, minimalist interior design, and 335-mile range, the Model X stands out with its one-of-a-kind “Falcon Wing” rear doors.

Designed to appeal to luxury buyers, the Model X plays in the upper price range of the SUV segment, although deep cuts have dropped the price significantly this year. While that might be bad news for those who paid a higher price in 2023, it’s good news for new car buyers as the base Model X now qualifies for a $7,500 federal tax credit because it starts at less than $80,000.

As more luxury brands enter the EV SUV market, the Model X faces stiffer and stiffer competition. Among those EVs vying for your attention are the Mercedes-EQ EQS, Cadillac Lyriq, Rivian R1S, and BMW iX.

What’s New:

For now, the 2024 Tesla Model X carries over without change. Tesla frequently executes over-the-air updates to improve features and functionality, so there may be changes midway through the year.

Our Recommendation:

The base model is a great way to save a bundle now that the Model X qualifies for the $7,500 tax credit. However, if you add even a paint color upgrade, the price bumps over the $80,000 cap, making the vehicle ineligible for the tax credit. If you want lots of options, go big and get the Plaid.

2024 Tesla Model X: $79,990

The base Tesla Model X uses a dual-motor powertrain with all-wheel drive (AWD), achieving up to 335 miles of range (322 miles with the 22-inch wheels) on a full charge. It’s also relatively quick, with an advertised 0-60 mph time of 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 149 mph.

The list of standard features is what you might expect for an SUV in this price range. It includes 20-inch wheels, LED headlights and taillights, a panoramic glass roof, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, automatic climate control, a swiveling 17-inch touchscreen with navigation, and a 17-speaker audio system.

Three different key options are available. You can use the traditional proximity key fob that alerts the car to your presence, use your phone as a key with the same functionality, or use a key card.

Keeping things smooth and controlled is an adaptive air suspension. You can choose ride firmness via the touchscreen monitor or let the Model X decide. The system also has a self-leveling feature that allows the driver to lower or raise the vehicle as needed, such as when driving in deep snow.

Tesla is famous for its Autopilot suite of driver assistance features. It doesn’t drive itself and still requires the driver’s full attention, but these features enhance safety and comfort. It bundles automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control.

One unique feature of the Model X is its rear doors. Tesla calls them Falcon Wing doors. They operate similarly to gullwing doors but with more articulation, making them more usable in tight parking spots. The Model X front doors open and close automatically, another futuristic concept more cars should adopt.

In its standard layout, this is a 2-row SUV with five seats. A third row of seats is optional, which brings the seat count up to six or seven depending on whether you opt for second-row captain’s chairs. Black is the standard interior color, but a black-and-white or cream-colored interior is optional, each adding $2,000 to the bottom line. A cool $1,000 gets you a steering yoke rather than the traditional round steering wheel.

As for color, Stealth Grey comes standard. Pearl White Multi-Coat, Deep Blue Metallic, and Solid Black will set you back $1,500, while Ultra Red adds $2,500 to the bottom line.

There are two option packages available to enhance the semi-autonomous driving tech. Enhanced Autopilot ($6,000) adds Navigate on Autopilot, automatic lane changing, Autopark, Summon, and Smart Summon. With Summon, the Model X can park and unpark itself in tight spaces.

Full Self-Driving Capability ($12,000) has all of the perks of Basic and Enhanced Autopilot plus traffic light and stop sign control. Additionally, Tesla has equipped it for Autosteer on city streets, which will improve semi-autonomous driving when the over-the-air update becomes available.

As for chargers, Tesla offers a wall connector for $475 or a mobile connector for $230. The wall connector is best for home charging, while the mobile connector can travel with you and adapt to various outlets.

When you factor in the $1,390 destination fee and $250 deposit, the starting price of the Model X comes to $81,630 ($74,130 if you qualify for the federal tax credit). Assuming a 60-month loan at 5% interest with no trade-in or money down, the Model X will have a monthly payment starting at about $1,540. See 2024 Tesla Model X models for sale near you
