The 2024 Volvo XC40 combines legendary safety and security with a bold design that shuns the sloping rear quarters and rounded-off edges that are all too common in today’s SUV design.
The XC40’s mild-hybrid powertrain consists of a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and an integrated motor/generator rated at 247 total horsepower. All-wheel drive comes standard.
While not as efficient as a plug-in hybrid, this setup delivers a pleasing blend of power and fuel economy. Those seeking a greener alternative can turn to the all-electric XC40 Recharge (reviewed separately).
Three trims make up the 2024 Volvo XC40 line: Core, Plus, and Ultimate. Each trim offers two themes: Bright or Dark. The words refer to the XC40’s exterior moldings. Bright means chrome. Dark means black.
Challenging the XC40 are such heavyweights as the Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Mercedes-Benz GLB. There’s also the Lexus NX hybrid and, though slightly larger, the similarly priced Lincoln Corsair Grand Touring plug-in hybrid.

What’s New:
The big news for 2024 is the addition of standard all-wheel drive (AWD). The XC40 Core gains hands-free keyless entry, a power liftgate, and a wireless charging pad.
The Plus loses the Driver Assistance Package and its adaptive cruise control option but gains 19-inch wheels, a 360-degree Surround View camera, and an air purifier. The Ultimate trim gets pixel headlight technology, power rear child locks, cornering lights, and 20-inch alloy wheels.
Our Recommendation:
The Volvo XC40 Plus offers the best combination of features, luxury, and value. But if you want adaptive cruise control, you’ll have to move up to the Ultimate.

2024 Volvo XC40 Core: $40,100
For not much more than a loaded Honda CR-V or Volkswagen Tiguan, the 2024 Volvo XC40 Core offers a way into a premium compact luxury SUV without breaking the bank.
The Core’s goodness begins with its safety features, which include forward collision warning and emergency braking with pedestrian, cyclist, and large animal detection. The Core also comes with lane-departure warning and assist, and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert.
Should you cross the divider into the path of an oncoming vehicle, Volvo’s Oncoming Lane Mitigation can steer the XC40 back into its lane.
Along with full airbag coverage, including front knee airbags, the Core features a rear backup camera, rear parking sensors, and a road sign information feature alerting the driver to posted road signs such as speed limit, do not enter, and no passing zone.
A quick walk around the Core’s exterior reveals 18-inch alloy wheels, power-retractable auto-dimming and heated side mirrors, LED headlights with automatic high beams, and rain-sensing wipers.
A proximity keyless entry system allows locking and unlocking the door simply by touching the handles, and a hands-free power rear liftgate makes it easy to access the cargo area when carrying luggage or groceries.
Integrated roof rails and dark-tinted rear privacy glass look complete the package.
A look inside the Core’s cabin reveals a fresh, modern design complete with textile upholstery. If you prefer leather, it’s a $1,100 upcharge.
Luxury amenities include dual-zone automatic climate control with a humidity sensor, cruise control, an 8-way power driver’s seat with memory, a wireless charging pad, and 4-way power lumbar support on both front seats.
Heated front seats, a tilt/telescoping leather-wrapped sport steering wheel, and 60/40 split-folding rear seats with manually folding headrests add a premium look and feel.
High-tech features include a configurable 12-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch center display for the media, climate, and vehicle functions. A highly functional touchscreen allows the driver to select the placement and position of the control buttons.
On the infotainment front, the XC40 comes standard with Google Built-in, granting access to Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Google Play store. Apple CarPlay, Volvo Apps, and SiriusXM satellite radio are also included, as is a 250-watt Volvo High-Performance audio system featuring eight speakers and Air Woofer technology.

Additional equipment for the Plus includes fog lights, front parking sensors, a panoramic power moonroof, 19-inch wheels, an interior air purifier, and a crystal gear selector knob by Orrefors (optional when selecting the Dark trim).
Rounding out the upgrades to the XC40 Plus are an enhanced ambient interior lighting package, driver and passenger-seat manual cushion extensions, power-folding rear headrests, a power passenger seat, and 360-degree Surround View camera with front, rear, and side park assist.
Also notable: The Plus trim’s remote key fob can open or close the windows and moonroof.
XC40 Plus buyers can choose between leather upholstery or leather with microfiber inserts when selecting the Dark theme.
