Honda CR-V (6th Generation: 2023 - Current)

Key Improvements: The current Honda CR-V is the largest and most technically advanced version to date. If you want a hybrid powertrain but don’t need all-wheel drive (AWD), this is the generation to get as the previous gen only offered the hybrid engine with AWD. An expanded Honda Sensing driver-assist suite is made standard across the board, adding features like a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic detection, traffic sign recognition, and Traffic Jam Assist. New safety equipment includes front knee and rear side-impact airbags. Finally, along with larger 7- and 9-inch infotainment touchscreens, every trim has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, made wireless on upper-level trims.

Model Updates: Since its debut in 2023, the only change of note is the addition of the Sport L Hybrid trim for 2024.


Honda CR-V (5th Generation: 2017 - 2022)

Key Improvements: The fifth-generation CR-V carries much of what we liked in the fourth generation: good resale value, fuel economy, and reliability. Off-road adventurers will appreciate that the fifth-generation CR-V rides much higher, with 8.2 inches of ground clearance on AWD models vs. 6.7 inches on the previous version. For passengers with long legs, an additional 2 inches of rear-seat legroom comes in handy, and there are 5 additional cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seat folded. You’ll also find an improved interior with higher-quality materials and more safety features. That includes the comprehensive Honda Sensing driver-assist suite. Available features in this generation of the CR-V include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, a hands-free power tailgate, rain-sensing wipers, and a 330-watt premium audio system.

Model Updates: In 2020, the CR-V added a fuel-efficient hybrid engine option, while the base LX gets the same turbocharged engine as the other CR-V trims. The LX also gains the Honda Sensing driver-assist suite, making it standard across the board. Touring models gain a heated steering wheel and a wireless charging pad.


Honda CR-V (4th Generation: 2012 - 2016)

Key Improvements: The fourth-generation Honda CR-V is larger than the previous generation, with a more sophisticated design, a quieter cabin, and more features. There’s more power under the hood and better fuel economy, too. The fourth-gen CR-V’s cabin remains the same size as the third-generation CR-V but has a slightly larger cargo bay. Honda’s Real-Time All-Wheel-Drive system is improved for better operation and enhanced ability to send the engine's torque to the rear wheels. Depending on the trim, CR-V buyers can look forward to Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity, a multi-angle rearview camera, and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat.

Model Updates: The CR-V was updated for 2015 with a new continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), replacing the older 5-speed automatic. This change, along with a revised direct-injection system, results in better fuel economy. The 5-speed had some issues, so we'd recommend going with a 2015 or newer model. Also new is a larger 7-inch infotainment touchscreen. A new Touring trim is added to the CR-V lineup, bringing a more upscale vibe, a power liftgate, and the Honda Sensing driver-assist suite. For 2016, the limited-run SE trim has special two-tone paint and 17-inch alloy wheels.


Honda CR-V (3rd Generation: 2007 - 2011)

Key Improvements: The 2007-2011 Honda CR-V touts more rounded contours, a more powerful engine (up to 166 hp), and more standard safety equipment. The previous generation’s side-hinged rear gate and spare tire are swapped for a traditional liftback design, with the spare tire moved beneath the cargo floor.

Model Updates: The 2008 EX-L trim gains a power driver’s seat and dual-zone automatic climate control. In 2010 the CR-V got a facelift and a more powerful engine. For 2011, the Special Edition (SE) trim has 16-inch alloy wheels, a 6-disc CD changer, and steering-wheel audio controls.


Honda CR-V (2nd Generation: 2002 - 2006)

Key Improvements: The second-generation CR-V is a much-loved version, with cool features like a folding table stored below the cargo area floor (a feature carried over from the first generation). A 2.4-liter engine generates 156 horsepower. For 2005 the lineup gained a 5-speed automatic transmission, front-side airbags, plus traction and stability control.
