Today’s Autotrader Find isn’t just a cool replica of an old Ferrari, but it’s a prop from the 2019 film “Ford v Ferrari.” It’s titled as a 1987 Mazda RX-7. But on the outside, it’s a Hollywood-quality replica of a 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB Competizione Speciale.
Considering that authentic Ferrari race cars from this era go for tens of millions of dollars on the auction block, the asking price of $150,000 for this replica is a real bargain.
Not a Mazda or a Ferrari
This car really doesn’t have much in common with an RX-7, neither aesthetically nor mechanically. It employs a custom Cobra chassis that was designed to fit this Ferrari replica body. Rather than the V12 that powered the real GTB, power comes from a Ford 5.0-liter V8 crate engine linked to a 5-speed transmission.
The interior amenities are pretty limited since this is a movie prop of a 1960s race car. There’s one seat, a few simple gauges, a full roll cage, and little else. Adding a second seat would add some practicality to this Ferrari replica, but this probably isn’t a car you’re buying for practical purposes.
The fact that it’s titled as a Mazda RX-7 means you could actually register this car. You could put a license plate on it and drive it on the street. That means that in theory, you could daily drive something that looks like a 1966 Le Mans-ready Ferrari racecar, but with a fraction of the value and with a low-maintenance Ford V8.
This movie star is available for sale at Exotic World Motor Cars in Addison, Texas, with the aforementioned asking price of $150k. Whether you’re looking for an addition to a collection, a new project, or just something unique to drive around, you won’t see anything else on the road quite like this faux Ferrari.
