With the third installment of the Transformers series hitting the big screen, this week Chevrolet is rolling out a new special-edition Camaro based on the movies. Known as the 2012 Transformers Special Edition Camaro Coupe, the bright yellow Camaro is styled to look like the automotive form of Bumblebee, one of the Autobot heroes from the popular films.
The Transformers Special Edition will be available in the US as a $3,000 option package on 2LT and SS Camaro coupes. The model follows up on a similar special edition 2010 Camaro coupe, which was also designed to resemble Bumblebee and commemorate the Camaro's participation in the earlier Transformers films.
"The Transformers franchise has helped introduce Camaro ? and Chevrolet ? to a whole new generation of fans," said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. "Its role in the films helped make the Camaro the best-selling sports car in America, and one of the best-known cars of any kind around the world."
In the films, the Transformers are alien robots that have come to Earth disguised as various vehicles. Of course there are good robots, called Autobots, and the bad robots, known as Decepticons. In addition to Bumblebee's disguise as a Chevy Camaro, Autobot Jazz is disguised as a Pontiac Solstice, Ironhide as a GMC pickup and leader Optimus Prime as a Peterbilt semi truck. When necessary, the Autobots morph out of their vehicular disguises into their robot forms.
While the Transformers Special Edition Camaro won't morph into a robot, it will have other, more earthly distinctions from a standard Rally Yellow Camaro. Like the 2010 special edition, black racing stripes will grace the sports car's hood, while Autobot shield logos will appear on its front fenders. Twenty-inch black-painted alloy wheels and a rear wing will also be standard, while options include 21-inch alloys and a ground effects package.
According to Chevrolet, ordering for the 2012 Transformers Special Edition will begin in July, with vehicles arriving at North American dealers in September.
