• VW reveals images of Beetle Convertible.
  • Engine specs roughly mirror traditional Beetle.
  • Styling also mimics Beetle hardtop.

Volkswagen recently showed off several teaser images of its upcoming 2013 Beetle Convertible ahead of the new model's debut at next month's Los Angeles International Auto Show. The automaker also announced several other details about the new ragtop, from engine and transmission specs to projected fuel economy information.

The 2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible's exterior styling is hardly a surprise, as it mimics nearly every line on the standard hardtop Beetle. That includes the traditional Beetle's flattened roofline--a distinctive trait visible when the Beetle Convertible's soft-top is up. When it's folded down, the convertible top retains a stacked look instead of being stowed under bodywork, which recalls the original 1960s Beetle Convertible. On the inside, the Beetle Convertible also keeps the model's unique details, including an available body-colored dashboard.

The Beetle Convertible won't include many surprises under the hood, either. As in the traditional Beetle, the Beetle Convertible's standard engine is a 2.5-liter 5-cylinder that produces 170 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. According to Volkswagen, that engine features a standard 6-speed automatic, which is a departure from the standard 5-speed manual found in the hardtop Beetle.

Like its hardtop counterpart, the Beetle Convertible will also include two other engines. The first is a 2.0-liter turbodiesel motor that produces 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. Available with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic transmission, that engine is capable of a frugal 41 mpg in highway driving by VW's estimates. The automaker says the Beetle Convertible will also offer the Beetle Turbo's muscular 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, which produces 200 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. The sporty turbo powerplant will also be available with a standard 6-speed manual or an optional DSG automatic transmission.

While Volkswagen has yet to reveal pricing for the Beetle Convertible, the automaker confirmed that announcement will come closer to the droptop's launch in the fourth quarter of 2012.

What it means to you: If you've eagerly anticipated the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible's arrival, your wait is almost over.
